Ensuring Mental Wellbeing on a Remote Field Course to Study Ecology
Leading a field course to study the ecology of Campbell Island poses mental wellbeing challenges for participants due to isolation, extreme daylight hours, shared accommodation, and academic pressures. To mitigate these issues, proactive measures such as mental health support resources, stress management workshops, designated quiet spaces, regular check-ins, and peer support systems should be implemented to ensure a positive and enriching learning experience.

Case Study 1 You are leading a field course to study the ecology of the Campbell Island, a remote island offshore New Zealand in the Southern Ocean. This course will be taken by about 60 undergraduate from different universities within the UC system. It will form part of their Field ecology course and will be an integral part of the assessed course, counting towards 30% of their final grade. The goal will be for the students to work in pairs and observe the behavior of the island s bird population during the austral summer season. Each group of students will be asked to produce a report and a presentation and will receive a joint group grade for these. The trip will last 2 weeks, and accommodation is in dorms. Some rooms accommodate 2, some 4 students. Because of the southerly location and the fact that the trip takes place in the Austral summer, there are 20 hours of sunshine per day. What potential issues surrounding the mental wellbeing of the field participants can you envision, and what types of mitigating measures can you plan?
