  1. CONNECTING FOR SUCCESS IN ENA 101 NARRATED BY DR. LAUREN NAVARRO

  2. WELCOME TO ENA 101! We re excited to guide you through your college writing journey. This course is designed to help you improve your writing skills, which are critical for your success in college, the workplace, and everyday life. Writing is not always easy, and, at times, it can be downright challenging; but this course strives to boost your writing confidence by equipping you with the tools you need to produce college-level essays. Reading and research activities along with class discussions will help you explore and become more knowledgeable about your essay topics. Feedback from your peers and your professor will also help you write and revise your drafts into more polished work.We also welcome the language diversity you bring to the classroom and encourage incorporating those abilities into your writing process.

  3. THE PERSONAL IS PRINCIPAL If you love to write, you re in the right place. If you re not sure about writing, or maybe have had some bad experiences with writing in the past, you re in the right place. If you hate to write, we ll figure that out together as you gather a toolbox of ideas you can use in future classes as you encounter writing. Dr. Liz Clark Everyone in ENA 101 brings unique experiences to the class. Everything that makes you who you are is valuable when you write. Your story is significant, both to you and to all of us. Together, we ll explore how sharing stories personal stories, researched stories, creative stories, and stories that make an argument is a fundamental skill for communicating who we are and what we believe. What story do you want to tell? Dr. Liz Clark Think about your professor and your classmates as your squad . The three hours you spend in ENA 101 provide extra time to engage with your professor and peers. Ask questions, offer insights, and lean on your squad.

  4. LEAN ON ME If ENA had a theme song, it would be Bill Wither s beautiful tribute to interconnectedness Lean on Me, which starts off: Sometimes in our lives we all have pain, we all have sorrow. Sometimes, it s easy to get overwhelmed balancing work, personal, and academic commitments. This is the time to reach out to your professor for support. Reaching out early on if you re struggling can help get you back on track. In addition to guiding your writing, your professor can direct you to various resources that may help you to manage your mental health, personal challenges, and academic assignments.

  5. WHAT CAN I DO? HABITS OF MIND Openness the willingness to consider new ways of being and thinking in the world. Creativity the ability to use novel approaches for generating, investigating, and representing ideas. Curiosity the desire to know more about the world. Engagement a sense of investment and involvement in learning. Responsibility the ability to take ownership of one s actions and understand the consequences of those actions for oneself and others. Metacognition the ability to reflect on one s own thinking as well as on the individual and cultural processes used to structure knowledge. Persistence the ability to sustain interest in and attention to short- and long-term projects. Flexibility the ability to adapt to situations, expectations, or demands.

  6. HABITS OF MIND IN PRACTICE: TIPS AND TRICKS Time management Reading Participation Group Work Reflection Completing Assignments

  7. TIME MANAGEMENT Use class time to complete important work! Try to dedicate time each week to completing work from ENA 101. You can use a time management technique such as The Pomodoro Method to schedule smaller 25- minute work sessions. Do not let smaller weekly assignments fall by the wayside. When neglected for too long, these molehills have a pesky way of piling up into a giant mountain!

  8. READING Whenever students ask me how they can become better writers, I tell them to read! Reading your assigned materials (and anything else) will help to foster curiosity, openness, engagement, and creativity. In addition to strengthening these valuable habits of mind, reading helps to model effective writing. It familiarizes you with different genres of writing, sentence structure, and grammatical conventions.

  9. PARTICIPATION In class discussions and in group work, actively engage by sharing your own ideas and opinions. Respond constructively (and with kindness and openness) to the ideas and writing of your peers. Make it fun! Nothing is quite as boring as a class where everyone is quiet. The more we are engaged together, the faster the time will go and the more the group will learn in each session.

  10. GROUP WORK Group work helps to foster creativity, flexibility, and responsibility. Some of the best ideas and most unique approaches are inspired by bouncing concepts off others and talking through complicated problems. Group work helps make us responsible to others. In effect, everyone in a pair or group is both teacher and student. You are responsible for both guiding and learning!

  11. COMPLETING ASSIGNMENTS Sometimes, your instructor will give you assignments that can be written in stages (i.e. make an outline, write the intro). Completing these assignments and getting feedback on them will make it easier to tackle longer papers. Leave time for revision! Handing in draft assignments on time means that once you have feedback on an assignment, you can make some changes. Think of this as a positive thing. You are learning what needs to be done in order to become a better writer. Completing things on time becomes a habit! Get into the swing of it. You ll feel accomplished when you focus, persist, and complete your task.

  12. REFLECTION Your professor may give you chances to reflect on your writing and/or your experience in the class. Make sure you take advantage of these opportunities! Metacognition (thinking about thinking, or reflecting on your own thought processes and knowledge) will help you to learn more deeply and retain information. Reflection can also help you to identify and change patterns in your writing or issues that may be holding you back. In addition, it can help you to reinforce useful writing habits and request extra bits of personalized help from your professor!

  13. PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK! TAKING COLLEGE-LEVEL COURSES IS NOT EASY. GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT FOR BEING HERE. THAT S A SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT. KNOW THAT THIS IS A CLEAN SLATE, A FRESH START, TABULA ROSA. IT IS UP TO YOU TO DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE AND THIS COURSE IS HERE TO HELP YOU ALONG THE WAY. FINALLY WHEN IN DOUBT, REACH OUT!
