Enhancing River Safety: A Community Collaboration Story
A story of a village by the river facing dangers, where through collaboration and community efforts, safety measures such as building a fence, offering swimming lessons, and educating on river safety were implemented, reducing incidents and improving survival rates.

Whats your name? Where are you from? Where do you work? What populations are you serving?
There was a village built upon the edge of a river where the water churned roughly over the rocks
There were signs at the river s edge warning of the danger, but people often ignored the signs & fell into the river. They either drowned or flowed downstream to a waterfall & were never seen again.
A net was put downstream to catch those who had fallen in the river
A full-time crew was hired to watch for villagers floating downstream, pull them from the river, dry them off, & get them to ambulances.
A new hospital was built closer to the river s edge. All these efforts increased the survival rate but many were still injured or drowned.
A couple who moved to the village watched what was happening & asked if something more could be done to save them. (Collaboration) The villagers explained that they had developed a good system, & while they weren t able to save everyone, things had improved.

Fewer & fewer people were falling into the river and those who did fall in were better able to help themselves out.
Sometimes it takes a fresh perspective If you ve done it this way, and your parents did it this way, and your grandparents did it this way . It must be working, right?

Families with children ages 18 months to 4 years old Meets weekly throughout the school year Parents and children play, do crafts, read, sing and have a snack Parents have time out of the playroom to have support and education with a facilitator Children stay with 2 facilitators and continue to play
Parent education through a 16 week program Focus on the young child Increased empathy Respectful discipline technique Appropriate parent-child roles Increasing power & independence Having appropriate developmental expectations
Family education through a 15 week program Focuses on the early school-age years Children ages 6-12 attend group with two facilitators while parents attend their group Children and parents are learning about the same topics each week Come together at the end of the evening to practice the skills learned
Family education through a 12 week program Focuses on the adolescent years (13-18) Adolescents attend group with two facilitators while their parents attend group Adolescents and parents are learning about the same topics each week. Parents and youth spend half the class together practicing skills learned
We are going to miss coming to group every week! We should exchange numbers and continue to meet every week. Let s get together at the library. Hmmm, I think they still need the support

The BabySteps coordinator, the Playgroup Coordinator and the Parenting Class Coordinator weren t working together
Make the natural transition from BabySteps to Developmental Playgroup at 18 months. Families are typically placed with the same families they have been attending BabySteps with and that bond is already formed
Nurturing Parenting Program for Infants, Toddlers and Preschooler Families earn additional points for BabySteps to attend Families who are enjoying the playgroups can learn more information about parenting through this formal class
Parents who attend the playgroup and the Infant, Toddler & Preschooler parenting class are excited for the next step They attend the Parents and their School-Age Children Program
A bond to the community and their group Increased empathy among family members Respectful discipline techniques be implemented Appropriate parent-child roles Increasing power & independence for children Having appropriate developmental expectations
