Sculptures in venues including City Art Gallery The Museum of Science and Industry, which was home to a giant Bee over the summer, recorded 9,500 more visitors in August Galleries and museums CULTURAL & LEISURE SERVICES Sculptures in city and local districts resulting in additional visitors (despite a very hot summer!) Helped promote Read MCR initiative by National Literacy Trust with Bee a Reader scheme Subscriptions to Summer Reading Challenge increased Libraries
Eastlands Trust - quango responsible for management of leisure hubs Sculptures at Velodrome and the Aquatics Centre helping to promote the world-class sporting facilities available in the city The Velodrome (National Cycling Centre) hosted the Farewell Weekend, resulting in an additional 15,000 people through its doors over 3 days SPORTS PARKS Community group sculptures located in parks resulting in increased footfall to green spaces Developed new audiences as new people ventured into the parks to seek the sculptures Voluntary / grass root groups worked together and new fruitful partnerships are forming e.g. Park Ales Relationships with other stakeholders e.g. PCSOs near sculptures handing out trail maps and informing park users about the sculpture Parks
Sculptures made special appearances at CityCo managed events such as King Street Festival Bee in the City spin-off events brought even more people into the city, including the Farewell Weekend Trail throughout the city centre, benefiting BID s consortium and retailers and restaurants in the district Results included: Economic impact 33.5 million, GVA 10.2 million CityCo a quango that also manages the Business Improvement District (BID) Manchester BID recorded that footfall rose across the city centre by 14.3% in August and 13% in September, which equates to an additional 868,557 people across the 9 weeks of the trail. CITY CENTRE MANAGEMENT TRANSPORT PROVIDERS Official supporter of Bee in the City Aligned with aim to reduce car use and improve air quality Provided Metrolink (tram) offers and created posters for tram stops and digital outdoor advertising to promote the event Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM) Metrolink recorded a 30% increase in family travel card sales across the tram network
Bee in the City formed the main event of the summer programme Opened up opportunities for working with private sector funding in the future Council events unit EVENTS UNIT TOURISM SERVICES Official Supporter of Bee in the City Included in Visit Manchester channels Marketing Manchester
Community Programme with hard to reach groups aimed to improve health and wellbeing in that specific local community NHS funds were used to support sculptures for: Age Friendly Manchester, Manchester Youth Zone, Henshaws (sight loss), and Rainbow Haven (refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants) Helped to break down barriers and encourage participants to come into the city centre from the suburbs in the north NHS Primary Care Trusts HEALTH & WELLBEING CULTURE AND COMMUNITIES Working with children and young people services, formal and non-formal education providers, youth centres Community ProgrammeBees located in their community during the trail and forever more Groups have continued to use the sculpture as a way to fundraise for their community Culture and Communities
