  2. LA Belle Dame Sans Merci She found me roots of relish sweet, And honey wild, and manna-dew, O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms, And sure in language strange she said Alone and palely loitering? I love thee true . The sedge has withered from the lake, And no birds sing. She took me to her Elfin grot, And there she wept and sighed full sore, O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms, And there I shut her wild wild eyes So haggard and so woe-begone? With kisses four. The squirrel s granary is full, And the harvest s done. And there she lull d me asleep, And there I dreamed Ah! woe betide! I see a lily on thy brow, The latest dream I ever dreamt With anguish moist and fever-dew, On the cold hill side. And on thy cheeks a fading rose Fast withereth too. I saw pale kings and princes too, Pale warriors, death-pale were they all; I met a lady in the meads, They cried La Belle Dame sans Merci Full beautiful a faery s child, Thee hath in thrall! Her hair was long, her foot was light, And her eyes were wild. I saw their starved lips in the gloam, With horrid warning gap d wide, I made a garland for her head, And I awoke and found me here, And bracelets too, and fragrant zone; On the cold hill s side. She looked at me as she did love, And made sweet moan And this is why I sojourn here, Alone and palely loitering, I set her on my pacing steed, Though the sedge is withered from the lake, And nothing else saw all day long, And no birds sing. For sidelong would she bend, and sing A faery s song.

  3. SCASI An approach to assist with first planning. S: setting C: character A: action S: Style I: ideas Try to organise thoughts to cover each element in turn. This way there will always be something to write which will gain AO2 marks.

  4. Setting Where are we and at what time of day? What era is suggested by Knight at arms What is sedge ? Why is it withered ? Where do the couple go? What is suggested by the elfin grot Where does the poem end?

  5. Character Who is in the poem? Knight? Fairy? Narrator? How are they described? Look for detail and for the subtext beneath the description. Pale and wan? Eyes were wild? Wild, wild eyes?

  6. Action Verbs of movement Verbs of sound. Engage with the language she made sweet moan sighed full sore palely loitering

  7. Style Ballad form Note the structure Direct speech? Rhyme pattern are there any anomalies? Framing of the poem

  8. Ideas A love poem with a difference. Is this a traditionally romantic tale? Who is the seducer and who the seduced in this poem? How is the male figure affected by the events described? What is the message of the poem?

  9. And then you write. To your tables Divide the labour to get as many points down as you can in your SCASI area. Aim to quote and to zoom in to the key word to look at WHAT the poet is trying to do, HOW he does it and WHY it is effective
