  1. Taking Faith into Everyday Life Colossians 3:1-17 1. What is it? p. 1089-90

  2. Knowing what it is What is this thing called Faith I want to take? E.g. Finding a stapler or a hair-iron The faith we take into life: Is built on a New PERSPECTIVE Leads to a New LIFESTYLE Flowing out of a New DISPOSITION

  3. 1. A New PERSPECTIVE Choose to live as if God exists Assumed it meant I did a spiritual activity in the day Memory verse on my desk Praying at specific moments Evangelizing my fellow workers

  4. 1. A New PERSPECTIVE Suggests living faith is collection of spiritual activities They are good we should be doing them regularly Worshipping, witnessing, listening, praying, Key to growing in our walk with the Lord They are not the faith itself

  5. 1. A New PERSPECTIVE Problem: makes the activities of living the enemy Makes other people a hindrance to our walk with God This thinking is wrong and unbiblical The Holy Spirit uses these experiences to form Christ in me We need a NEW PERSPECTIVE We need the RIGHT perspective

  6. 1. A New PERSPECTIVE Living as if God exists not about opinions/preferences It is about REALITY God is real He has been working on salvation for the world Jesus These facts are the basis of a new, right perspective When Jesus returns we will appear with him in glory (v 4) A prize so amazing, awesome, dumb not to focus on it It guides our every decision

  7. 1. A New PERSPECTIVE Therefore Paul gives 2 commands: Seek things above (v 1) Focus, set your minds on things above (v 2) Not things on the earth Feb 2018 Boko Haram snatches girls from Dapchi One was not released: Leah Sharibu She wouldn t pretend to convert so that she could go home. Her focus and her heart were set on things above

  8. 2. A New LIFESTYLE Living our faith means we put off and put on Each is mentioned three times Put off/to death (v 5, 8, 9) Put on (v 10, 12, 14)

  9. 2. A New LIFESTYLE Put off Sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, greed, anger, malice, slander, obscene talk Put on Compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, love About things we do and why and how we do them Put off worldly ways and put on the ways of Christ

  10. 3. A New DISPOSITION Let the PEACE of Christ rule in your hearts (v 15) Peace does not come from our own effort It is a gift (John 14:27) Let peace rule flourish & grow Let the WORD of Christ dwell in you richly (v 16) Dwelling in the Word is like marinating, basking, soaking Cultivated by teaching and admonishing (v 16)

  11. 3. A New DISPOSITION Be thankful The third thing he says three times (v 15, 16, 17) Thankfulness is not something we conjure up The result of rightly perceiving reality.

  12. Living It Spiritual practices are good Bible commands them They cultivate our life in Christ Not all forms of spirituality & practices are good They can be disconnected from anything outside themselves Wrong ways to pursue spiritual fullness Focus on rules food, sabbath, visions, worship spirits They have a place they are commanded and encouraged

  13. Living It They are not the focus The focus is always Christ (2:17) The spiritual practices that help us present a challenge Without them we can never cultivate our walk with Christ Scripture commands them: prayer, fasting, devotion, They are essential to spiritual growth and vitality But JESUS is always the Focus!
