Embracing Change: The Diocese of London's Vision for 2030

Our 2030
Vision

A time of re-imagining

C-19 has caused great suffering, anxiety and changes to society and church life
A time of mourning, suffering and sharing the compassion of Christ
Forced change to church life – going online, leadership through small groups, crisis response and
collaboration
It has not been easy
Church giving and regular attendance has dropped
We haven't always known who is following online services or their level of engagement
Many have been exploring Christianity online
Where do we go from here?
‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?’ (Isaiah 43:19)

This is the beginning of a conversation
We’d love to hear from you about how we might communicate this vision to
your parishes, communities and networks as we support churches through
covid

Last summer over 6,000 people responded to our
listening campaign to discern our way towards 2030
Clear priorities emerged
The ambitions are broad and still stand,
despite Covid-19
But how we live and apply them has changed
This is our vision

Building on Ambassadors and everything we’re doing well to grow
disciples
Recognising 59% Christians in CoE say ‘their church does not equip
people well for life in today's world at home, work or elsewhere’
A journey we go on together, respecting different approaches

Question for discussion:
What support do worshipping communities need
 to grow
confident disciples, especially in these covid days?

Compassionate Communities

Building on 1,500 compassion initiatives in our churches each year

1.
Caring for God’s Creation – responding to the climate crisis
2.
Mental health and wellbeing – esp through Covid
3.
Modern Day Slavery and refugees
4.
Debt
5.
Youth violence and knife crime
6.
Homelessness and housing

Focus for the 2030 Vision. For the diocesan team to support local initiatives across
the following six areas::

Creative Growth

Population of London is growing while CoE attendance is declining

Call the church to be more creative, brave
and experimental

Working to our strengths and in collaboration with others

Question for discussion:
What support do worshipping communities need to
 grow in numbers, creatively?

To reach every Londoner, we need to grow….

…y
ounger, safer
and more
racially just

These are our 3 priorities

Acts 2: 17
Y
our young people shall see visions

We’re missing our young people…
Teenagers
Students
Young professionals

Question for discussion:
What support do worshipping communities need to grow younger?

Growing Younger

Acts 2: 28
You have made known
to
me the paths of life

Question for discussion:
What support do worshipping communities need in order to
 grow safer?

Becoming Safer

We have not done enough to prevent or respond to past abuse

We are sorry and must do better in:
Promoting a safer culture
Our responsibility to children and adults at risk
Responding to every safeguarding concern or allegation
Caring for victims/survivors of abuse
Responding to those who may pose a present risk to others

Acts

2: 5
from every nation under heaven…

Striving for racial justice

We are diverse, from many cultures and backgrounds,
speaking over 250 different languages.
We need to examine our theology, structures, and
appointments, to see where we have colluded with racism
We need to say sorry and make real changes
We need to be a community where people from diverse
cultural backgrounds can be visible and contribute at
every level of leadership and governance

Question for discussion:
How can our worshipping communities grow more racially just?

Slide Note

Opening remarks:

1. The ‘Thank you’s’ +Sarah has offered to Area Deans have been super appreciated and brilliant – great to start there.

2. We are hoping to go large in January – but let’s be realistic, the world is uncertain we will have to work this out together

3. ‘I also realise that there are parishes and clergy out there for whom a strategy is the last thing they want to engage with right now

4. And of course there are those parishes and clergy whose own sense of vision and strategy might make this feel unnecessary

5. However since 6000 folk responded in 2019 with their thoughts we have been developing a vision that we hope will inspire many, offer a clear sense of our collective ambitions and priorities, and give Area teams a direction in which training can be tailored to fit the parishes and clergy across this great city who are working hard to see God’s kingdom

6. Area Deans are key to this – your own strength, vision and wisdom, and your understanding of front line parish life across the piste will be key to seeing greater fruitfulness in all our deaneries

7. So the three mains Questions I will come to today

What do you think of the vision as a whole?

How can you and the Area/Central teams get the best buy-in across the Diocese?

Have you wisdom about how we roll this out – on the one hand it can’t wait, equally we know many are tired and uncertain just now

8. What follows is a presentation of our 2030 vision that you might be able to use in your own engagements and which we will be using to engage our leaders between now and the end of the year. A few changes notwithstanding.
