  1. Planter Project Friday 1st May 2020 WALT learn and apply effective research techniques.

  2. This weeks D&T challenge is to design and make a plant pot out of recycled objects. Follow the powerpoint to find out how we re going to do this. The challenge

  3. Research is the essential starting point to any project. So first things first, what do we need to know before starting this project? Research We probably need to work out the following things: What is the impact of throwing away plastic bottles? Why is food packaging being recycled? What is meant by climate change ? What is sustainability? What are the 6 Rs? And that s just to start! Watch the following video clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6xlNyWPpB8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erGnf7ws20E

  4. Not all things can be recycled, and sometimes recycling itself can harm the planet because of the energy needed to melt down and reform plastics. Recycling Watch the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yp1KKWpPpU Using the table and information you have seen list all of the good things about recycling and the bad things. Good Bad In your opinion is recycling good or bad? Justify your answer in the box below.

  5. Recycling is OK, but what else can we do? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luE5Aeqjf1Q Here s another video the 6 Rs In design terms, it means avoiding non-renewable materials such as plastics and it also means reducing the impact the product has on the planet.

  6. Using the table and information you have, consider all the ways you could apply the 6 Rs to your normal life. Look at things around your house to help you. I some examples in the table for ideas. The 6 Rs Example Your answers Reduce I probably don t need to use plastic bags when I go shopping. I could reduce the amount I use or buy. Refuse I will not buy small plastic water bottles. Repair I could sew torn clothes to make them last longer. Recycle I should separate out my recyclable waste. Re-use I could get ideas on Pinterest for re-purposing some old products. Rethink Maybe I don t need to always drive to the gym. I could walk instead.

  7. So weve done some basic research and now we understand the project better. But we need to do some very specific research now for our individual products. By re-using some of our recycling materials to grow food at home we are achieving many of the 6 Rs of sustainability. Which ones do you think we are achieving? Before you draw your ideas, you need to bear in mind where your plant pot might go. Have a look at these points to consider.

  8. Now its time to get creative and draw your ideas! If possible, use colour and use shading. Also add annotations: these are labels that explain your ideas more clearly. The more fun and creative, the better! Ideas

  9. So now youve come up with some ideas, you need to gather your recycling. Things to consider: Is the material waterproof? Can you hold soil and water in it? Can it be decorated? This video might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJJvghf1E7A Plastic bottles Good for holding soil; waterproof cans Good for holding soil and water; good for small pots. tins Good for holding soil and water; good for medium-sized pots cardboard Good for decorating the outsides with shapes and features. Model. List the materials you have and what you are going to use them for. Recycling items What I will use them for

  10. Now its time to make, test and evaluate your product! You need to get some soil and pop it in your plant pot. Then if you have seeds pop them in. If you have just 1 tomato then that will work also. This article explains how a tomato sliced can grow into a plant. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/ve getables/tomato/planting-tomato-slices.htm You now need to plant the seeds and water them. That s it! At least for a few days anyway!
