Effective Communication for Diverse Audiences in Geoscience and Anthropology
Exploring the Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion by Petty and Cacioppo in the context of communication strategies for addressing sea-level rise, displacement, and conflict. Emphasizing the importance of considering diverse audience profiles and utilizing central processing methods to engage critical thinking and motivate action.

Diverse Audience To whom am I speaking too? -Student Demographics or Profiling: Values, Experiences, Well-being -All members are not alike! Really? What do I want them to know and do? Make information clear and supportive i.e. case studies, evidence, peer to peer activities How will they respond? How do I know if I accomplished this in my class? Watch their response or feedback
Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion (ELM) Richard Petty and John Cacioppo Social Psychologists Individual s evaluate information in a dual-level process approach Central Processing Peripheral Processing
Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) Central Processing -Individual is motivated by instructor s message thru: 1. Involvement 2. Different Sourcing of Lecture 3. Disposition of Individuals -Individual is given the steps or ability to be knowledgeable about the issues Engages critical thinking and more likely to take action
Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) Peripheral Processing -Individual lacks ability to process i.e. complexity, language +response to message irrelevant or unimportant -Individual becomes influenced by non-content issue i.e. texting, weekend party, instructor s appearance, etc. -Shallow approach to lecture = low impact on thoughts and action
Conflict In 1911, Ellen Semple, American geographer, stated The search for better land, milder climate and easier conditions of living starts many a movement of people which, in view of their purpose, necessarily leads them into an environment sharply contrasted to their original habitat (Piguet, 2012, p. 149) .
