Patriots Sons and daughters of Liberty Wanted the freedom to make their own rules in the colonies no taxation without representation! Still British?
Loyalists Didn t want to give up the protection of the most powerful nation in Europe Many still felt loyal to the crown They didn t think America could succeed without the support of Britain
On the Fence Just like in most political cases today, the majority of colonists were on the fence about it all The war became a battle to win the support of those on the fence Patriots were ultimately more successful
A common punishment Tarring and feathering was often used against loyalist It would burn the skin and was mostly used as a form of humiliation
