YEAR 8 JULIAN OPIE - PORTRAITS week 1 This week we are going to look at the work of Julian Opie You are going to draw a portrait of someone and then transform it into the style of Julian Opie. You will need a couple of sheets of A4 white paper, a pencil, a black pen Either ask a person you live with to pose for you or work from a photograph You can colour your image with either felt tips, colouring pencils, water-colour paints or use liquid food dye to paint with.
Julian Opie Julian Opie is a digital artist (and sculptor). He is best known for his portraits that reduce subjects to essential lines and colour planes. He is a contemporary British artist known for his distinctive depictions of figures, portraits, and landscapes. The highly stylized treatment Opie gives his subjects where facial features are created by thick black outlines and filled in with solid areas of flat colour is a blend of Pop Art and Minimalism with is contemporary.
What do we like about Julian Opies Portraits? He has used bright, simple and flat colours He has simplified facial features Yet kept people s character How has he done this? Look carefully at how different each portrait s eyebrows are very different from each other yet he has kept the pupils (centre part of the eye) the same. He has also paid a lot of attention different types of hair There are slight differences in the mouths but not much.
How are we going to draw our portraits in the style of Julian Opie? Get the Proportions right first 1. Take a sheet of A4 paper and sketch out an oval shape in the middle of the page 2. Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the oval this is where the eyes go 3. Then draw another line half - way between the eyeline and the bottom, this will be where the bottom of the nose goes 4. Between that line and the bottom of the chin is where the bottom of the lips will be positioned. See example.

Simplify shapes and lines Julian Opie Portraits Rub out horizontal pencil guidelines Eyes- simplify to pupils only- rub out lines around eyes and eyelids. Eyebrows- simplify shape Nose- nostrils only Mouth- short lines for top and bottom of the mouth Hair- simple lines only Black pen when ready go over lines with a black pen See example.
Julian Opie Portraits Year 8 week 1 You can colour your portrait in Using 1. watercolour or 2. Felt tips or 3. Colouring pencils or 4. liquid food Colouring (like coloured ink)
Evaluation Please write a couple of sentences WWW- (What worked well?) EBI- (Even better if?) Please date and name your piece of Art -work and upload it onto Google Classroom. Not e-mail.
