Depth in Art: Foreground, Middle Ground, Background

Foreground, middle
ground and background
Art: Year 2
We will be learning
about 3 words we use in
art;
foreground
,
middle
ground
and
background
.
In this painting can you
guess which arrows are
pointing to the
foreground, middle
ground and background?
Background:
This mountain rock
is
furthest
 away from us in the
painting.
Middle ground:
The tree is
in-
between
 the mountain rock and
the river so it is in the middle
ground.
Foreground:
The river is the
closest
part of the painting to us.
The road at the
bottom of the drawing
is
closest
 to us so it is
in the
foreground.
The blue car is
in-
between
the small
houses at the top of
the drawing and the
road that is closest to
us, so it is in the
middle ground.
The houses at the top
of the drawing are
smaller and show they
are
further
away so
they are in the
background.
The text is all jumbled up! Can you help put them into
the correct order?
These 3 parts help to give a
painting or drawing
DEPTH
which means they help to make
what is in a painting, drawing or
photograph look
bigger, longer
or
further-away
than it
actually on
paper/canvas/photograph!
This is the picture I drew of
the view outside my bedroom
window. Now it’s your turn to
create a picture using what you
have learnt about foreground,
middle ground and background.
You will need paper and you can
use; pencils, pens, felt-tips or
crayons for your drawing.
