In this lab, students will measure the density of pennies before and after 1983 by analyzing mass and volume data. Chemistry Sept 10, 2019 Do Now Density of Pennies Lab Day Collect necessary equipment for the experiment. You many begin collecting data only after your prelab is checked/initialed and both lab partners are present. (2,2,3 groups) NOTE: Because we re using 100 mL graduated cylinders , use 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 pennies. Double check the dates on pennies you use. Penny Density Lab Overview In 1983, the composition of pennies was changed. How did this affect their density? Purpose: To measure the density of pennies before 1983, and after 1983. How? Both the mass and volume of new pennies and old pennies are measured. Mass using an electronic scale (2 decimal places) and volume using a graduated cylinder (1 decimal place) and water displacement. Data collected for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 pennies. Data GRAPHED such that the slope of the graph is the density. (2 graphs) Formal Lab Report writing.

Purpose: To determine density of older (before 1982) and newer (after 1983) pennies using a graph. 4. Hypothesis: Which do you expect to be higher? 5. Procedure: What YOU DID in past tense 6. Data: both mass and volume for some number of pennies. 7. Data Analysis: Graphing Mass vs Volume. Best fit line slope = density. 8. Discussion: Evaluate results with percent error. State at least two sources of error. Questions. 9. Conclusion: Refer to Purpose and Hypothesis.
