Having a clear introduction, main body and conclusion to your response will help you to achieve a more sophisticated answer. Your opening paragraph should: A) Define any key terminology showing that you understand the meaning. By defining a relevant key word/s within the opening paragraph, you demonstrate to the examiner that that you understand the term and can provide a focus for the rest of the response. B) Demonstrate your broad understanding of the concept, for example, media language or representation. Do not launch into the essay straight away (the analysis of chosen texts etc.) You need to place them into context first. Make direct links to the question.

I- Introduce the case study you have been asked to analyse, where necessary, provide some brief product context. The candidate could have defined the key term intertextuality in more depth to further support their understanding. 3 Here, the candidate makes a sophisticated point that the music video has been constructed purposefully for particular effects thus demonstrating a broader knowledge of the concept of media language. Firstly the cinematic, long shot of the white clouds in the bright blue sky signifies the beginning of the music video / narrative acting as an opening establishing shot. Additionally, at the bottom of this shot, a billing / credit block has been introduced. This shot purposefully positions audiences to decode a clear intertextual reference to feature films as credit blocks commonly appear on film posters and in film trailers. This reinforces that the music video has been constructed in the style of a short film, which creates audience interest and may offer a challenge to typical music video conventions. This immediately suggests a sense of uniqueness and intrigue to a new emerging artist. Point Denotation [Example] Connotation [Explanation] In the music video for Dream by Dizzee Rascal, ethnic representations have been constructed to reinforce significant differences between different social groups. To some extent, representations of Black youth culture have been represented in a negative, stereotypical way. However, the video does also attempt to subvert negative ethnic representations through the construction of the narrative in the video. The music video is constructed to show a positive story of a rapper who triumphs over adversity, gets a record deal and becomes a success. This is reinforced in the video by showing a juxtaposition between Dizzee as a young black rapper to the older white female who endorses the positive messages in the video through approving facial expressions as Dizzee starts to change his lifestyle. This encourages young people (and typical fans of the rap genre) to work hard and go far , by showing Dizzee overcoming his adolescent and criminal lifestyle in favour of working hard for a record deal. This may appeal to an audience as a refreshing change from more stereotypically negative representations of Black youths in the media and has been mediated to represent Dizzee positively and as a role model from a minority ethnic group.
