  1. 37% of UK emissions are heat related: 17% of total emissions from space heating Currently, fossil fuels are the main heat source in the UK. In order to reach net zero emissions by 2050 across all sectors. However, significant decarbonisation of the electricity grid provides an opportunity to almost completely decarbonise heat using heat pumps Clean Growth transforming heating. Overview of Current evidence Dec 2018

  2. Decarbonisation to date BEIS (2019) Final UK greenhouse gas emissions national statistics 1990-2017; CCC analysis Emissions from heating homes have remained stagnant Actual emissions from buildings increased by 3% to 88 MtCO e in 2018 Currently, only 5% of energy in homes and buildings from low-carbon sources By 2035, all new heating systems will need to be low carbon Form 2025 at the latest all new homes will be fitted with low carbon heating systems Need to reach net zero carbon emissions in homes by 2050

  3. Policy landscape

  4. Ten Point Plan This Ten Point Plan to get there will mobilise 12 billion of government investment, and potentially three times as much from the private sector, to create and support up to 250,000 green jobs We will turn the UK into the world s number one centre for green technology and finance, laying the foundations for decades of economic growth by delivering net zero emissions in a way that creates jobs and allows us to carry on living our lives. The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, Prime Minister This has the potential to deliver up to an estimated 42 billon of private investment by 2030 across energy, buildings, transport, innovation and the natural environment. - The Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, President COP 26

  5. UK Government Decarbonisation Strategy for Heat and Buildings expected soon. This is likely to include: Regulatory framework to phase out high carbon fossil fuels. Area zoning for heat networks and other strategic solutions to support deployment. Support for upgrades to their heating systems through the Homes Upgrade Grant. Ambitious new build regulations and low flow temperature requirements for retrofit. Support for public sector decarbonization. Minimum energy efficiency standards for housing (private and social rented). Mechanisms to encourage able to pay households to invest in low carbon heat.
