This term our topic in school was to be Law and
Order. Unfortunately as you are at home we will
not be able to many of the excellent activities I
had planned including our brilliant Murder
Mystery day at Abbey House Museum (hopefully
we will be able to take part in this in the future).
This week you will be looking at crime and
punishment – the ultimate penalty – the death
penalty! Does the punishment always fit the
crime?

Match the crime with what you think the punishment might be/should be
– found in the attachment - there are more than just the ones below:

Read the following case study on the next 4
slides. It is a real life case study of an American
man who committed a serious crime and was
punished as a result.
You will have some tasks to complete around your
thoughts on the case study and crime and
punishment.
 
Ask your parents/family about their opinions on
crime and punishment and for any help you may
need with the following tasks.
 
Case Study: You be the judge!
 
Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams Was the co
founder of the Los Angeles Crips
gang.
Mostly known for 
murder
 & 
drug trafficking
 
In 1981 he was convicted of
murdering 
four
 people during two
robberies and sentenced to death
row. His prosecutors described him as
a ‘cold blooded killer’ with no regard
for human life.
 
He did not apologise for his crime,
and maintained that he was innocent.
 
Tookie was sentenced to death.
Should the death penalty be used
here?
 
 
Life on Death Row: A Changed Man?
 
 
Whilst imprisoned Tookie:
 
Wrote 9 children's books that
educate children to avoid gangs and
crime
 
Wrote the Tookie protocol for
peace-a guide on how communities
can create peace
 
Saved the lives of over 150,000
youths who were preparing to join
gangs or got out of a gang
 
Was nominated for the Nobel Peace
Prize 5 times
 
 
 
Received a 2005
Presidential Call to
Service award from
George Bush
 
Fight for Clemency (Mercy)
 
Many people fought for Clemency
(the right for mercy) for Stanley
Williams.
 
These included celebrities, civil
rights activists, 
religious leaders
and politicians. They felt that
Tookie had changed his behaviour
and had helped thousands in need.
 
BUT
: Does this change anything?
What was the consequence?
 
On 13
th 
December 2005,
after 24 years on death row,
Stanley Williams was
executed by Lethal
Injection.
 
Hours before his execution
he said “
I just stand strong
and continue to tell you, your
audience, and the world that
I am innocent and, yes,
 
I
have been a wretched
person, but….
I have redeemed myself.”
 
 
 
Learning Objectives
 
To explore the issues surrounding the death
penalty as a form of punishment in modern
society.
 
To consider the debate surrounding capital
punishment/death penalty and form an opinion
using some of the arguments studied.
 
 
 
 
Task 1:
Title:

Consider the following and write down/discuss some
brief answers:
 
1) Should the work that Stanley Williams did have saved him from
the death penalty? Explain your answer.
 
2) Do you think he was really reformed (changed) or was he doing the
work to try and save himself? What do you think?
 
3) The victims families were present at the execution, how do you
think they would have felt? Do you think it is right that they
should have been there?
 
Capital Punishment: For & Against
 
TASK 2:
1)
Sort the cards that you have been given (in a separate
attachment) in to two columns – FOR & AGAINST  Capital
Punishment.
2) Rank the cards from 1-5 in order from most important to least
important for both FOR & AGAINST. When you do this discuss
the ranking of your cards with parents/family.
3) There are suggested answers in another attachment…don’t cheat!
Only look after you have finished the table with your thoughts.
 
 
 
Task 3
Argument For & Against
 
Using the arguments that you have sorted, write a
balanced argument (like the one we did at school on
social media a few months ago).
Use the arguments that you have sorted in task 2 to help
you write your balanced argument.
In your balanced argument can you include:
Introduction, conclusion, relative clause, parenthesis,
ISPACE openers, correct spelling, handwriting and
capitals and full stops.
Remember
 a balanced argument should be written in a
formal style!

into the UK as a form of punishment”
