Creative Marble Run Project for Fun and Learning

Materials

Marbles/small ball/ rolled up bit of tin foil
Scissors
Sticky tape (Sellotape/ masking tape etc)
 Sting
Hot glue gun (If you have one)
Cardboard or stiff paper(packaging, cereal
boxes, stiff envelopes etc)
Other useful items: a glue stick, a few
clothes pegs, egg cartons
Anything you can make it with safely

How do you design and make a marble
run?

Let’s do some practical!
The aim of this task is to make a marble run and time how long it
takes the marble to travel to the bottom. The challenge is to get the marble travelling as
long as possible.

Rules

You must work within a small group, work together and have fun.
You must remember to time how long it takes for the marble to travel.

James Dyson

Sir James Dyson kicked off his career simply enough: his designs, founded on one
objective, insisted that things should just work and work well. But  aside from being a
vacuum tycoon, Dyson was also the brains behind the hand dryer seen on most public
bathrooms today, as well as a new type of fan called ‘Air Multiplier’.

He is one of Britain’s best know product
designers and his Foundation is very
supportive of developing design and
engineering learning in children and young
people.

Paper run

Recycled run

To help you to control the time your marble takes to run its course you’ll need to consider a few factors:

Potential energy
:
mass x gravity x height
The heavier your marble and higher your slope, the more energy your marble will have.

Friction
: The rougher or stickier the surface, the slower your marble will travel.

Angle of the slope:
The less steep the angle of the slope, the longer the marble will take to reach the bottom.

Roll lengths of newspaper to gain height
Cutting toilet roll tubes in half lengthways to make a ‘slide’
Use tape to create friction
Roughen some of the surfaces
Use plastic bottlenecks
Use cardboard corners to create angles
Cut a spiral from card or a paper plate
Use egg cartons as ‘steps’
Use kitchen towel to make the surfaces bumpy

Task 2: Start experimenting!

When you have got a sketch design you are pleased
with start making some parts of your marble run in a
‘sketchy’ way.
Don’t worry if it doesn’t work the way you want to –
that’s what you’re trying to work out!
Remember - you want to slow down the marble!

Task 3: Testing and timing!

Remember to time how long it
takes the marble to get to the
bottom.
