Conflicting themes within VGI Working Group include advancing VGI in California and future-proofing utility investments. The clash lies in risk-taking versus risk-minimizing approaches, highlighting the importance of value and connection to EV adoption. Recommendations focus on defining long-term objectives, exploring value propositions, scaling implementations, and securing future-focused infrastructure investments.

  1. Conflict in VGI Themes VGI WORKING GROUP JUNE 26, 2017

  2. Two Primary Themes within VGI Working Group Theme #1 How do we advance VGI in California? Theme #2 How do we future proof charging station investments by the utilities?

  3. The Conflict Theme #1 Advancing VGI is about taking risk and acting now Theme #2 Future Proofing is about minimizing risk and anticipating the future Future proofing cannot define VGI Development And VGI Development cannot define Future Proofing

  4. Advancing VGI is the Primary Theme PEV Adoption How Do We Advance VGI in California? How do we future-proof utility investments? Value determines the connection between VGI and EV Adoption

  5. How to Advance VGI? Activities Define Long-term objectives Explore VGI Value proposition Scale implementation now Support Innovation Outcome Define implementation pathways to access grid value through contracts or utility programs Unnecessary to predict future communication pathways focus on the grid outcomes

  6. Future-proof utility infrastructure investments based on defining end-to-end system architecture Development of communication architecture in the context of desired long term outcomes from VGI End-to-End perspective not dictated by intermediary devices Protocols need to generated at the end points and decoupled from the pathway Any third party intermediate infrastructure device between the supplier and consumer end nodes shall operate independent of the protocol Do not create a reliance on communicating with the charging station, as it may not be necessary or present in the future Inclusive of multiple communication options, not exclusive Meets cybersecurity requirements Use the internet and smartphone as a guide

  7. Summary Conflicting goals between themes make progress difficult without separately addressing questions Outcomes of future-proofing should not limit/impede innovation now or in the future Future-proofing is about minimizing risk, not market development or defining VGI value Common denominator is use cases and VGI value
