OUTCOMES for the Session By the end of the Workshop you will: Understand the importance of workforce planning Have identified the person-centred needs of your client group Understand how to write a competency Have access to resources that will evidence competence Have shared best current practices that work for you

  4. INTRODUCTIONS Working as a table, introduce yourselves to the rest of the group: Who you are Which organisation Who your clients are What is most important to you: Workforce Planning Person-Centred Competence And why?

  5. WHY WORKFORCE PLAN? What is a workforce plan? A workforce plan sets out your future workforce needs to meet your business objectives as identified in your business plan. Why workforce plan? Effective workforce planning ensures that you have a workforce of the right size with the right attitudes, values and skills organised in the right way within the available budget. This underpins the delivery of quality, personalised and safe services meeting the needs and aspirations of the people you are supporting.

  6. WHY WORKFORCE PLAN? A good workforce plan helps you effectively recruit, retain and develop workers and: ensures you are doing what you need to do to stay in business in the future is affordable is informed by your National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC) and other relevant data sources demonstrates resources invested in staff development takes account of Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards, the law, regulation and requirements of commissioners (where appropriate).

  9. Who are your clients? Create a profile that combines all the general care and support needs of your clients and bring this composite person to life: What are their care needs? What are their support needs? Who are their family and friends? What are their likes and dislikes? What makes them happy?

  10. What is Competence? Definition of Competence Competence is the ability of an individual to do a job properly. A competency is a set of defined behaviours that provide a structured guide enabling the identification, evaluation and development of the behaviours in individual employees Who is responsible for competence in the care setting?

  15. DESIGNING YOUR OWN COMPETENCES How can you identify what competence is? What does good look like? Who demonstrates this already? What behaviours/skills/attitudes do they display? What behaviours will you expect from competent staff? How will you know/evidence when your staff have achieved competence? How will they know?

How to write a Competence Statement KEY OCCUPATIONAL AREA: TASK PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Any standards which should be set What the person is asked to do Place Equipment The time it should be completed in Method Any set procedures that should be observed Starting point Any measure of accuracy that could be applied

How to write a Competence Statement KEY AREA: Caring TASK/ COMPETENCE PERFORMANCE/ WHAT YOU OBSERVE CRITERIA/ KNOWLEDGE To provide Personal Care in a person- centred way Ensure engagement with the person. Must be aware of the personal history, likes and dislikes Obtain consent in relation to when and how the care is provided Must be aware of the care and support plan Establish rapport and maintain engagement throughout the delivery of the care Must demonstrate positive attitude to the client Must observe values of dignity and respect
