Recreation Therapy and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Frazier Rehab Institute Spinal Cord Medicine Program
Recreation Therapy Provides the opportunity for individuals with spinal cord injury to: Develop life skills through the continued participation in recreation and leisure activities Work on community adjustment and reintegration activities Learn new techniques to enable the participation in past recreation and leisure interests and the opportunity to learn new skills
Provides education and support in the following areas: How to adjust to changes in free time How to modify recreation and leisure skills to meet current needs and interests How to access transportation and functionally use a wheelchair in public How to work with trained therapy or service dogs Information and hands on experience in adapted sports and recreation programs How to locate and use adaptive equipment How to identify community resources and programs
Leisure Education and Awareness Individual and group discussions to learn about issues related to having a disability (Americans with Disabilities Act -ADA) Ways to cope with societal attitudes, stereotypes, and discrimination issues Opportunities to identify and practice problem solving techniques for unfamiliar and uncomfortable situations Identification of time and stress management techniques Explore transportation options Discussion on the benefits of continued participation in recreation and leisure activities Explore available resources in your home community
Community Re-Integration* Address rehabilitation goals in a community setting with support of a therapist and family member/caregiver Test and improve mobility skills in a real life situation Learn and re-learn recreation and leisure skills Increase levels of comfort and confidence *PLEASE NOTE: A Community Reintegration Outing requires a Physician s order to participate AND the patient must have a sitting tolerance of 3 hours.
Locations for community outings might include: Home School Workplace Restaurant Movie Theatre Ball Park Shopping Mall
Goals for a community outing might include: Problem solving skills Wheelchair mobility & independence Architectural Barriers Pressure Relief Transfers Strength and Endurance
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)* Uses highly skilled and trained dogs to motivate and inspire clients with SCI as they work on their rehabilitation goals. Areas where a Therapy Dog might be involved include: Social Interaction Fine and Gross Motor Skill Development Strength and Endurance Balance Coordination *PLEASE NOTE: Animal Assisted Therapy requires a Physician s order to participate and cannot be offered to any patients who have a current order for contact precautions or an immuno-compromised status
Sports and Recreation Introduce programs for individuals with SCI based on the individual s recreation and leisure interests and ability Discuss the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle Introduce partnerships with local and national organizations based on their level of interest Introduce sports and general recreation equipment
Adapted Sports Programs Rugby Basketball Hunting Tennis Rowing Fencing Road Racing Hand cycling Archery Air Rifles
Adaptive Equipment Recreation Therapists provide the opportunity for individuals w/ SCI to learn about and utilize various types of equipment based on their specific recreation and leisure interests. The purpose of this equipment is to make their recreation and leisure experience more successful and enjoyable.
Adaptive Equipment used for recreation/leisure:
Community Resources The Recreation Therapist will provide individuals w/ SCI available resources in their home community. Provide support and information on how to utilize and become involved in community programs. Create resource packets to include: publications, websites, local contacts and programs available in the home community and how to access them such as: local parks and recreation programs SCI Support groups Fitness and wellness programs
