1. The reasons people give 1. The reasons people give Belief in the mission Trust in the staff Fiscal responsibility
2. The 3 pockets of giving 2. The 3 pockets of giving Annual Capital Planned Giving is Legacy Giving
3. Year 3. Year- -round Stewardship round Stewardship Continuous reminders of generosity, instead of one big push in the fall Narrative budget vs line-item budget Creates a culture of generosity
Legacy Giving and Planned Gifts First, Let s Sweep Away the Myths A. Our donors are different. B. Our donors do not have the capacity to make planned gifts. C. Our donors are not interested in planned gifts D. Our donors prefer we not talk to them; they won t take our calls. E. Our Church Is different; we do not need planned gifts. MidAtlanticFoundation.org
Why make an effort for planned gifts? 1. Billions are passed to the next generation each year 2. Every major non-profit asks a minimum of 4 times a year 3. Donors have many ways they can leave a gift 4. Stability of an organization is based on financial security 5. The gifts often take the organization into new ministry MidAtlanticFoundation.org
TALKING WITH A DONOR TODAY Remember...... Its not a sales call, it is outreach You aren't talking them into something You are a match maker You are a tour guide to generosity You are on the Ministry team of Fundraising and Friendraising
Knowing your donor better: How is your family? Children? Parents? Grandchildren? What do you do? How did you get into this work? Or, tell me how you started your business. What does your spouse/partner do? How did you and your spouse/partner meet? Have you taken a great vacation lately? Where do you like to spend time away? Does your family do philanthropy together? Do you serve on any other nonprofit boards? MidAtlanticFoundation.org
What motivates your donor?: What do you enjoy most when making a gift to a charity? What has been the most meaningful aspect of your involvement with our Church? Where does our Church fit/rank among your charitable interests? If you made a gift, what would you like to see it accomplish? Have you considered long-term plans to support your areas of interest and your philanthropy? Have you thought about what you want your legacy to be? Why have you been so generous through the years? MidAtlanticFoundation.org
Legacy gifts and Endowment Funds: A donor may be considering a planned gift at this time. These life events prompt many people to consider their legacy and how they want to live the remainder of their life. The Foundation will reach out to a legacy donor on behalf of the church. The Foundation will help any church establish a legacy program and endowment fund. MidAtlanticFoundation.org
