4. The Church Universal All the saved; the universal body of Christ. Matt. 16:18; Acts 2:47; Eph. 1:22-23 There is no organization or work given to the universal church.

5. The Church Local All the saved in a given physical location. 1 Cor. 1:2; 2 Cor. 8:1; Gal. 1:2; Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:2; 1 Thess. 1:1; Rev. 2-3 The local church has an organization and a work.

6. The Church God wants Christians involved in a local congregation Paul tried to join himself to the disciples in Jerusalem (Acts 9:26). God has a place in the local church for every member (1 Cor. 12:12-31). Emphasis is placed upon the church assembling together: Heb. 10:24-25; 1 Cor. 5:4, 11:18, 14:26

7. Worship Acts 2:42, 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:18-22 This worship consisted of: singing offering prayers preaching the Lord s Supper (on the Lord s Day) taking up a collection (on the Lord s Day)

8. Evangelism The assemblies of the local church provide an opportunity for unbelievers to come and hear the word of God (1 Cor. 14:23-25). The members are to take the word out to others (1 Thess. 1:7-8; Acts 8:4). The local church is to support the preaching of the gospel (Phil. 4:15-16).

9. Edification That which builds up or strengthens the Christian is the word of God (Acts 20:32). God has given the local church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers for the edifying of the church (Eph. 4:11-12). We teach and admonish one another with our singing (Col. 3:16). The assembled church also administers corrective discipline (1 Cor. 5:4-5).

10. Benevolence This benevolence was always limited to needy saints: Acts 11:27-30 Romans 15:25-26 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 2 Corinthians 8:1-4, 9:1 1 Timothy 5:3-16

11. Limitations to the Work of the Local Church The local church is not authorized to engage in any and every good work. The local church is not to hire out its responsibilities (Eph. 4:11-16). The is a difference between what the local church can do and what individual Christians can do: Mark 14:7; James 1:27; Acts 2:46; Gal. 6:10
