  2. TIGER TALES BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 From the Office of the Principal & Assistant Principal Wow! We can t believe that our first year together is almost over. It has been a SUPER year. We have tried to incorporate all of the great traditions that make CME such a great school with new ones that we hope will fast become traditions. FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L up and spending time with the family at the softball fields, the movies, hanging out at Astroworld, swimming at the neighborhood pool, and especially getting together for daily dinners. All six of us would sit around the dinner table and talk about our day. We all took turns telling each other about the best part of our day. Hit a homerun in our softball game, finished the Salt Grass Reading Club in school, being picked as a safety patrol girl for fifth grade it could be anything big or small. It didn t matter what mattered was that we spent that time together. As we got older, it became harder and harder to get all of us together. Now, we live far apart, but when we get together for dinner, we still ask each other about our best part of the day. This year we have added our No Homework nights. Each month, we have set aside a night where we promote family time. This time to me is so very important. I remember growing We challenge you to take the time on our no homework nights and spend them with your children. I promise you that one day just like me they will look back and remember those nights that you spent just being together and they will appreciate them just like you appreciate them now. We look forward to the last nine weeks of the 2015-2016 school year. Thank you for supporting CME and your children in making this a heroic year. Our dates to come are April 13th and May 11th. We will be challenging you to Go for a Walk with the Family and Color with the Family . Please be sure to send in your pictures to Melanie.hodges@fortbendisd.com so that we can earn our special days. The Dynamic Duo Melissa Bolding, Principal, & Jackie Boyd, Assistant Principal

  3. STAFF NEWS BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 From the Counselor In the month of March, Colony Meadows Elementary School students worked very diligently to prepare for the STAAR test. We really embrace the character trait cooperation as the entire campus promotes a positive spirit and a quiet environment for our students. Please know that we request parents not to visit the school or have lunch here on the STAAR testing dates, so that our campus can adhere to state guidelines for test security. Here is another great idea from http://www.mvparents.com/ Keep Parenting Positive Parenting has been called the toughest job you ll ever love, and it s true that it is hard work. It is important to maintain a positive outlook on parenting, even on those occasions when parents have to use the word no . Here are some action-response tips for using a positive response with children, rather than using the word no . CHILD ACTIONS: FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L 1. Little Max screams and hits his mother. 2. Becca leaves all her toys on the floor. 3. Rachel screams, I want that toy! 4. Ness and her brother fight over markers. 5. Teenager, Greta, comes home fifteen minutes after curfew PARENT RESPONSE: 1. Our family rule is no hitting mommy, daddy, or baby sister. 2. Remember You chose to leave your toys on the floor, so you are choosing the consequence: they will be away in the closet for two days. 3. I know why you are angry, but we are not buying anything today. 4. Remember, if you are choosing not to share the markers, you are choosing not to have them. 5. Remember, you choose to come in 15 minutes after curfew, so you are choosing to have a 15 minute earlier curfew the rest of the week. Thanks for the support you give your child and all of the children at Colony Meadows. Remember that I am available to answer your questions- so call me and I am happy to help you, your family, and your child in any way. Jennifer G. Lappage Counselor

  4. STAFF NEWS BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 From the Clinic Greetings! The clinic sure has been busy this second semester. Most of the health screenings have been completed. If your child brings home a physician referral form, it means that he/she did not pass the school screening. The goal of the school screening program is aimed at detecting problems that could limit your child s educational opportunities. If you received a referral form, please take your child to your Physician. Have your Physician complete the evaluation, sign it, and return to the Clinic as soon as possible. I need to these forms back before mid-April. FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L anytime your child receives an immunization. Students must be compliant and up to date on immunizations to attend school in Fort Bend County. We had dental care programs this past month. Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade met Dr. Larry Caldwell s staff and Tillie the Tooth. The children really enjoyed this presentation. They discussed the importance of eating healthy, brushing and flossing their teeth, and visiting their dentist regularly. We will have Kindergarten and Pre-K registration soon and all children need their immunizations up to date. Please have your Pediatrician check the status of the immunizations. I can print an up to date immunization record for parents that may need one for their child. Please provide the clinic an updated record We just celebrated WATCH week. WATCH is a community health education initiative designed to increase awareness of cardiovascular health. The program promotes the awareness of 5 risk factors that can lead to heart and stroke problems: W=Weight, A=Activity, T=Tobacco, C=Cholesterol and H=High Blood Pressure Parents, we ask that you support positive healthy choices regarding nutrition, proper rest, and exercise for your children. We want them to remain healthy until the end of the school year. We have many activities combined with P.E. and Coach Andrews for health awareness. We are looking forward to finishing this school year with a healthy and happy ending! Your School Nurse, Allison Jones, BSN, RN

  6. GRADE LEVEL NEWS VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY Kindergarten & First Grade Kindergarten is excited that spring is here! We can t wait for our field trip to The Oil Ranch at the end of the month. Thank you PTO for sponsoring this fun filled day, and thank you parents for volunteering to come and enjoy the day with us. International week was such a success this past semester; we enjoyed learning about so many cultures and dressing up to show off. The bread tasting was quite a hit too, yummy!! We are gearing up in Kinder for a writing test, so mom and dad, continue to help your child practice writing short stories about a topic of their choice. CME Gala is coming up April 1st and Kindergarten will have a special activity to bid on there, PPPP Pajama Party! This should be great fun with food, friends and a movie, but it is limited so make sure you come to the Gala to reserve your spot. The Kindergarten teachers want to thank all the parents for their help this year, it is because of you that we are successful! FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L The Kindergarten Team This year is going by too fast! We have been busy learning about freezing and melting, living and nonliving, and solids, liquids, and gas. In Social Studies, we have been learning about culture and some important people from our history. In English Language Arts, your children have been busy writing, reading folktales, fables, and fairy tales, and working on their comprehension skills. After they read books to you, have them close it and talk about what they have read. It could be retelling the story, discussing what it made them think about or new facts that they learned. The Texas Readers Club creative book reports are due April 22nd. This is a fun way for them to showcase their favorite book with their peers. In math, we have been learning about plane shapes and solid figures. Also, the students have worked on basic fact strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. The students will learn about money, measurement, and time for the fourth nine weeks. We are looking forward to all the fun on field day, but are hoping that it is not too hot! Thank you for all of your support this year. We could have not had such a successful year if it was not for all of your support and time. We are so lucky to have such devoted parents and we wish all of you all the best of luck in the future. The First Grade Team

Earlier this month, fourth graders participated in their second Hands-on-Science activity, which included three labs led by parent volunteers. The labs focused on conservation of natural resources, weathering/erosion, and soil as a filter. Students were able to predict, observe, and record the data they collected from the experiments. In early April, fourth grade will participate in their second math lab, also led by parent volunteers. The focus for this lab will be measurement, fractions, and financial literacy. Students will FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L have the opportunity to learn about each topic through hands-on activities. Finally, in May, the students will travel to George Ranch Historical Park, where they will learn about life as a Texas pioneer. The fourth nine weeks looks to be quite an adventure! The Fourth Grade Team Our fabulous fifth graders have been busy preparing for our STAAR math and reading tests, which happen next Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. We can t wait for them to get a chance to show what they know and really shine! The fifth grade class recently visited Fort Settlement Middle School, and students turned in their course selection sheets. 11. SCHOOL-WIDE NEWS VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY Music CME students have enjoyed learning about several composers this year. By teaching about composers, I am able to cover many music concepts such as vocabulary, music theory, music history, music genres and instrument families. In February, all students learned about Russian born Peter Tchaikovsky, who is well known for the wonderful music of "The Nutcracker" ballet. He wrote many other works of music, including the "1812 Overture" composition, which was written as a celebration of Russian's win over France after Napoleon invaded their land. Since it was a celebratory song about war, Tchaikovsky wrote for cannons to have a part in the song! It was great fun to listen to and the students learned that this song became an American staple after the Boston Orchestra played the "1812 Overture" for a 4th of July celebration in 1974. Several grade levels had either studied or were studying this part of history in their classroom so the connection was very neat to witness! FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L Later, we began a study of Scott Joplin, an African-American composer and coronet/ piano player who invented Ragtime music. He is well known for the piano pieces titled "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". Joplin was born two years after slavery was abolished and therefore, navigated the waters of a free man that was not given every opportunity of other free men. Although most jobs for African Americans were very hard and often dangerous, he and his brothers took a different path and formed a music group called the "Texas Medley Quartet" that was hired to play live music at parties. CME students were amazed to think about social activities that took place without electricity. He then spent many years playing at saloons across the country, where his ragtime music was developed. I look forward to our last composer study of the year where we will travel back to the Classical music time period (1750-1830) to study Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most brilliant composers of all time. Many of his songs are easily recognizable and have been included in numerous piano books, movies, tv shows, children's lullaby collections and more. Just a few of his more well know works are: Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata and Ode to Joy. Beethoven became deaf in his later years but continued to compose music. His endurance and dedication are an inspiration and a lesson to never quit. As always, I want to express my joy in being your student's music teacher. I love being their teacher and look forward to our music adventures every day! Ms. Soto Music Teacher

  12. SCHOOL-WIDE NEWS VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY Library & Student Council We have been working hard this year to make sure our students at CME are excited about reading. Some of our great events this year include two book fairs, two author visits, three reading incentive programs, and of course our Seuss Day celebration. We have also encouraged our students to read a variety of books by reading books from the Texas Readers Club, Texas Bluebonnet Award, and Texas 2x2 list. As summer approaches, I encourage everyone to keep reading. There are a number of summer reading programs aimed at keeping students motivated over the summer including Barnes & Noble, Half-Price Books, and the Ft. Bend County Library. Finally, we will host a BOGO book fair in May to help kick off summer reading. According to J.K. Rowling, If you don t like to read, you haven t found the right book. So keep reading because the right book is out there! FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L Check here to see if we have it: http://fbisd.ipac.sirsidynix.net/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=cme&lang=eng&reloadxsl=true#focus Need a book from our library? Mrs. Hodges Librarian Student Council has been very busy! Carnation sales were a huge success! Student Council members did an awesome job promoting the sale by encouraging classmates to purchase flowers and creating posters for the hallways! The distribution of the flowers ran smoothly and carnation sales raised $1800.00. There were lots of smiles on the faces of students as well as teachers! Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to help with our recycling campaign! We appreciate you getting here bright and early to supervise our recyclers as we strive to make the world a better place! With every bag deposited into the recycling dumpster, we are saving trees! Thanks for helping make that happen! Mrs. McClure & Ms. Heisig Student Council Sponsors

  14. PTO NEWS VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY PTO Vice President PTO Programs started 2016 in January with an introduction to cultural traditions with the program, "Exploring Brazil Through Capoeira", a special performance from the Brazilian Arts Foundation. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art combining elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. The deep roots and heritage of Capoeira have contributed to the rich culture of modern-day Brazil and all grades witnessed an explosion of spins and kicks as the performers showed how coordination, cooperation, teamwork, movement, rhythm, and agility can combine for a spectacular performance. Even our teachers ended up on stage dancing with the performers! FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L Fort Bend's Astronomy on Wheels program and volunteers joined us for Math and Science night to teach about the size and spacing of the solar system with hands on displays and set up multiple telescopes around the track for night-time viewing. Special thanks to all their volunteers who came to share their enthusiasm with space with us that night! In February, the PTO sponsored two performances of Robotics and discovered "What makes a robot a robot?". Students explored switches, programming, output/motors and feedback loops in an interactive journey from simple, funny robots to complex (and super cute) humanoid robots. Junie B. Jones from Main Street Theater visited Pre-K through 2nd grade in March and did a solo performance. She told tales from her "journal", as well as held question and answer sessions with the students. In April, Joe "The Trick Star" Odhiambo, former NBA All-Star Performer and 12-time Guiness World Record Holder, will come perform for students in 3-5 and show that faith in yourself, persistence, patience, responsibility and working hard can lead to success. And finally, the PTO will sponsor additional programs in May for Cinco De Mayo and end of year celebrations! Thanks to your support of PTO, the students have been able to experience cultural, STEM, and motivational presentations to enhance their studies. Jenni Kennington PTO Vice President

PTO NEWS VOL 24, ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 BROUGHTTOYOUBY PTO PUBLICITY PTO Gifts In the spring semester of each school year, the PTO makes gifts to the school from funds acquired through PTO fundraising activities, membership drives, and any other sources. Last year the PTO Board approved two gifts: landscaping and a multi-purpose pavilion. As an update, the landscaping project has been completed including removing trees, purchasing six new trees, installation, maintenance, and irrigation modifications. Additionally, the multi- purpose pavilion is in the process of being erected. FROMTHE OFFICEOF T H E P R I N C I P A L for classroom supplies. The extent to which these gifts can be funded will largely be determined by the success of the Spring Gala and Auction. This year, the PTO Gifts Committee is proposing two gifts: track repair and classroom gifts. The PTO Board will vote on the proposed gifts at the April PTO Board meeting. The gravel track was initially installed in 2005 and periodically requires maintenance to add new gravel and level out the track for the safety of the students. The full cost of the track repair will be up to $6,162. The classroom gift request includes whiteboards and wish lists On April 1st, CME will host the 25th Anniversary Spring Gala and Auction at Sweetwater Country Club. This event is one of the most important fundraisers of the year. During the live auction, there will be Raise the Paddle events to fund the track repairs and the whiteboards. For additional information and updates on the gifts, please check out the Colony Meadows Elementary PTO website at: http://www.cmepto.org/ Boba Nikolic & Kelly McKnight Gifts Committee
