Character Creation and Dramatic Conventions in Drama Class

Hell’s Alley

Using a piece of written text
as a stimulus to create a
character

Today’s Lesson:

What is a stimulus?

Crack! The stone cools my ear, hits the bollard at the end of
our road and spends itself against the boarded window of
what had once been our corner shop. It was the Laz boys from
the Row beyond the ‘Engineer’ again. They do not like our
street. We do not like them either so I do not see why they
should like us. Only, why they have to pick on me I do not
know. I try to slip out of school and get home with as little
trouble as possible. Mind you, I can throw a stone when I
have to, because it’s no use being an angel when you live in
hell - and that is what the gangs round about our street call it
– “Hell’s Alley”. But we call it home.
