Character Analysis in "The Doll's House" by Katherine Mansfield
Kezia, the youngest sister in "The Doll's House" by Katherine Mansfield, is portrayed as a strong-willed and compassionate character who defies social norms by welcoming the Kelvey sisters to see her dollhouse. Despite being advised against associating with them, Kezia shows kindness and non-judgment towards the outcast girls, showcasing her defiance and empathy. In contrast, Isabel Burnell is depicted as bossy and controlling, asserting her dominance over her siblings regarding the dollhouse. The contrasting behaviors of Kezia and Isabel highlight themes of social hierarchy and kindness in the story.

The Dolls House by Katherine Mansfield
A theme can be defined as a comment about life that an author expresses in a story. It is through the theme that most of us can relate to a story. Every Essay 2 probably will explain a character or characters a conflict a resolution
Choose one character from the story and tell us what you think about that character. What facts from the story cause you to see the character in this way? SparkleBunny say, Kezia, the youngest sister, is strong willed and seems to care less about the social standpoint of her peers than others in the story. She shows this when she lets the Kelveys sisters into the yard to see the dollhouse. "Oh, well," said Kezia. She didn't know what to reply. "It doesn't matter. You can come and see our doll's house all the same. Come on. Nobody's looking."
Choose one character from the story and tell us what you think about that character. What facts from the story cause you to see the character in this way? WWRD says, Kezia stood out because she invited the Kelvey girls over to see her doll house. She didn t discriminate against the girls because of their social status like everyone else did. She is very kind, nonjudgmental, and na ve. We viewed her this was because her mother told her not to associate with that family, but she didn t understand the reason why she couldn t. Everyone in their class ignored Lil and Else, except for her.
Choose one character from the story and tell us what you think about that character. What facts from the story cause you to see the character in this way? Team Dollhouse says, Kezia is a defiant character that doesn t care about anyone s status in society. Towards the end of the story Kezia s aunt says, You know as well as I do, you're not allowed to talk to them. Run away, children, run away at once. And don't come back again, said Aunt Beryl. And she stepped into the yard and shooed them out as if they were chickens. Off you go immediately!" she called, cold and proud.
Choose one character from the story and tell us what you think about that character. What facts from the story cause you to see the character in this way? Mary says, My impression of Isabel Burnell is that she s pretty bossy. When the Burnell children go to school after receiving their dollhouse, Isabel says I m to tell because I m the eldest. And you two can join in after. But I m to tell first, a little later she also says, And I m to choose who s to come and see it first.
What types of conflict--person versus person, society, self, nature, and God/fate do you think are in the story, and how are the conflicts shown? Stardust says, The main conflict would be person vs. society, Kezia vs. society. She wants to show the Kelvey children Lil and Else the dollhouse. But society cast them out because they are poor and looked down upon. The Burnell s are not allowed to associate with the Kelveys. Kezia could be like everyone else and dismiss them or not care who are how they are and show them the doll house anyway.
What types of conflict--person versus person, society, self, nature, and God/fate do you think are in the story, and how are the conflicts shown? MHC Girls says, It first shows person versus society because all the girls at school don t associate with Kelvey girls because they are lower class. It also shows person verus self because Isabel s sister was Kezia torn about the Kelvey girls seeing the doll house or listening to her mom.
Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? Jacee Sheppard say, I think the doll house in and of itself is symbolic. It s a symbol of the life that comes with privilege and the fact that those who have it are very protective of it. For it had been arranged that while the doll's house stood in the courtyard they might ask the girls at school, two at a time, to come and look. Not to stay to tea, of course, or to come traipsing through the house. But just to stand quietly in the courtyard while Isabel pointed out the beauties, and Lottie and Kezia looked pleased.
Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? Katerina say, The lamp in the dollhouse seems to be especially important to Kezia. While admiring the dollhouse she loves and notices much more about this small lamp instead of the bigger aspects of it and the other details in the house. Maybe she sees herself as something that may seem small and insignificant to others but not to herself. And then as the end when Elsa tells her sister how she saw the lamp.
Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? Watermelons says, The lamp could possibly be symbolic of hope. It gives hope and motivation to the outcasts of the story: Kezia and the Kelvey sisters.

The author portrays ideas of hope as the story progresses and stresses the importance of empathy for others.
A theme can be defined as a comment about life that an author expresses in a story. What does this story seem to be telling us about life? WWRD says, The smallest gesture can make a huge difference in somebody s life. Standing out from the crowd to do the right thing may seem frowned upon but overall is the right decision.
A theme can be defined as a comment about life that an author expresses in a story. What does this story seem to be telling us about life? Vickers Insurance says, Even against discrimination, someone will eventually make a difference and stand up against society s way of living. The story stresses the importance of the small things you can do for an individual or a group of people. What seemed like nothing to Kezia was a live changing event for the Kelvey s because this basic act of kindness could possibly change their life for the better.
A final thought . . . Excellent work!
