BACKGROUND CPEEL is one of the three beneficiaries of MacArthur grant after a rigorous selection process in 2010 Established August 2011 Unique Capacity Building initiative in the Africa Region Collaborating UI Departments/Faculties Department of Petroleum Engineering Department of Economics Faculty of Law Collaborating Global Institutions Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) Ghana Institute for Petroleum Studies (IPS) Port Harcourt, Nigeria Center for Energy Economics (CEE), UT, Austin, Texas, USA
RESEARCH GROUPS The Centre develops research capabilities in the following broad thematic areas: Energy Pricing and Taxation Regulation and Legal Issues in Energy Energy and the Economy Oil and Gas Electricity Energy and the Environment Energy and Environmental Law Energy statistics Climate Change Renewable Energy Technology and Related Issues Energy Modelling
Regulation or Deregulation of the Nigeria Downstream: How Sustainable The study was funded by FOSTER It was to provide a critical analysis of the subsidy regime in the petroleum downstream sector. Issue of subsidy is a very sensitive issue in Nigeria The research undertaken by CPEEL provided a strong analytical and empirical support for deregulation of the Nigeria Downstream Sector as a way to enhance the long term sustainability of the downstream energy sector The outcome of the research was published as a research monograph and the policy brief was also widely distributed to key stakeholders A policy dissemination workshop was organized in Abuja (the Federal Capital City)
Regulation or Deregulation of the Nigeria Downstream: How Sustainable The Public Workshop was attended by top officials of the National Assembly, including: The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Chairman of the House Committee on the Downstream Petroleum Sector It was also attended by key stakeholders of the energy sector and the Nigerian economy Some of the key findings of the study are incorporated in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) currently before the National Assembly Few months ago, the Federal Government also announced the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria

Key Success factors CPEEL has garnered national recognition in energy training, research and consultancy. Several Fellows of the Centre are highly regarded in the energy policy space in Nigeria The research addressed key policy issue that have been of national significance and hence there was a need for local evidence based research Key stakeholders in the economy were involved in every component of the research and the dissemination also involved top policy makers in the country Policy briefs from the study was widely circulated to stakeholders in the country
FARM AND INFRASTRUCTURE FOUNDATION (FIF) IS AN NGO WE ARE PARTNERING WITH FIF has been at the forefront of promoting policy and best practices in agriculture and rural development. In roads have been made to the top echelon of the legislature Senate and House of reps. The most recent is a memorandum submitted to the senate ad hoc committee on THE NEED TO MAKE THE RIGHT TO FOOD A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT IN THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
