What is a C.V.? The term 'Curriculum Vitae', commonly abbreviated to CV, can be literally translated as 'course of life'. Sometimes referred to as a r sum , it's a summary of your career history that is often the first phase in getting yourself noticed by potential employers. Your personal advertising campaign Like any advert, you should use your CV as an opportunity to sell. You want to sell your skills, your qualifications, you experience and your ability to do the job. Advertising is all about attracting attention and appealing to the needs of the buyer so highlight your strengths and achievements to the interest of the recruiter.
To see where you are at, lets do a quick TRUE or FALSE quiz QUESTION 1 TRUE CV s can be word processed or typed but never handwritten. QUESTION 2 A CV should always clearly state CV at the top of the page. FALSE QUESTION 3 FALSE Always send a CV with an application form.
QUESTION 4 TRUE Employers do not need to know your age, sex or marital status on your CV. QUESTION 5 FALSE A brightly coloured CV will attract attention and improve your chances. QUESTION 6 FALSE A CV should never be longer than one side of A4.

EDUCATION Education Name of School/College/Uni and the dates you attended Qualifications gained You may include details of relevant modules which have been studied Year Awarded
EMPLOYMENT AND EXPERIENCE Employment or Experience Employers Name All relevant experience counts. This could have been gained as part of your studies or voluntary Town/City where based Dates of work Job Title Brief outline of job role
EXTRA SECTIONS YOU COULD INCLUDE Other optional sections Personal Profile/Career Objective Place under Personal Details. Should be no longer than 3 4 lines. Can be changes to suit job description. Skills section if skills based Place before employment and education. Allows you to provide information specifically relating to advertised vacancy. Positions of Responsibility Place either before or after Employment. May include activities outside work e.g. Sports coach, Scout Leader etc.. Voluntary Work Opportunity to highlight your commitment to area of work and skills gained. Interests/Hobbies Employers want to see you as a well-rounded person. This information can give insight into your suitability for a job. Professional Development In house courses/training i.e. Health and Safety, National Licensees Certificate, Basic Food Hygiene, Customer Care
