First Step
–Choose a genre table to start at. Start looking (WITH YOUR EYES, NOT YOUR HANDS) at the books on your
table. DO NOT OPEN THEM.
Second Step
–The “first impression.” This first minute is the most crucial. Just like with normal speed dating, you look for an
attraction. This goes the same way with the books: which ones stand out to you the most, which one has a cool cover or an
interesting title, do you know the author of the book. Look to see if there is an attraction between you and the books on the
table. DO NOT OPEN THEM YET.
Third Step
–Start reading the book, the back cover is a good place to start. If the book is short stories, poetry, or nonfiction,
you can start at any point that interests you. If it is fiction or otherwise necessary, start with the first chapter. This should be
completely silent. You have only five minutes to “get to know” this book and see if you want a second date with it.
If you decided before the five minutes are up that you do not like the one you have chosen, pick another from the stack on the
table and start reading it.
Fourth Step
– Talk with your pals! Just like dating, you want your friends opinions on who you are seeing. Each person will
have three minutes to give their opinion on any of the books that are on the table. (HINT: If you brought one in this is your
time to share with your peers what you like about the book.) IF you didn’t bring one in, but you know about the books, share
with the others why or why not it might/might not be a good book to read this semester.
Fifth Step
–If you like your book speed date, write down it's "digits" on the handout I gave you at the beginning of class for
you to contact later. You are still going to explore the other books and can always “throw that fish back in” if a better book
comes along!
You must have a minimum of one book per genre filled out on your handout to turn in at the end of the activity.
