  2. +May Ayims Biography May Ayim was born in 1960 in Hamburg. Her father was from Ghana and her mother was German. She spent the first few years of her life in a children s home before moving in with a foster family. As an adult she studied pedagogy in Augsburg and Berlin. In Berlin she met African American author and feminist Audre Lorde at a poetry workshop.

  3. +May Ayims Biography In 1985 Ayim was one of the co-founders of the Initiative Schwarze Deutsche (ISD, Initiative for Black Germans). In 1986 the book Showing Our Colors was published. For years Ayim was active in the German feminist movement and the Afro-German community. She performed her poetry all over the world, including the US, England and South Africa. In 1995 she published Blues in Black and White. In 1996 she committed suicide.
