Department of Biochemistry: Generic Elective Department of Biochemistry: Generic Elective S R C A S W Name of the Paper: Biomolecules Content: The objective of this paper is to provide students with an understanding of biomolecules: Amino Acids, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Lipids, Nucleic Acids. Focusing on their key properties, biological roles and functions. The course also aims to outline organic and physical aspects of biomolecules along with the hands on experience given to students for analysis of these biomolecule during practical classes. Preparation of various types of solution (Molar, Normal, Percentage , Buffers). Separation of biomolecules by Paper and Thin layer chromatography Students who can opt: The paper is advantageous to students opting for BSc. (Hons) Biomedical Sciences, BSc. (Hons.) Food Technology and BSc. (Hons) Microbiology. If interested , other students can also apply since it would help them to understand life at the molecular and cellular level. Estimation of Mohr s salt by titrating it with KMnO4. Estimation of water of crystallization in Mohr s salt by titrating with KMnO4. Estimation of Fe (II) ions by titrating it with K2Cr2O7 using internal indicator. Estimation of Cu (II) ions iodometrically using Na2S2O3. Section B: Organic Chemistry Purification of organic compound by crystallization (from water and alcohol) and distillation. Criteria of purity: Determination of M.P./B.P. Separation of mixtures by chromatography: Measure the Rf value in each case (combination of two compounds to be given) a) Identify and separate the components of a given mixture of 2 amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, tyrosine or any other amino acid) by radial/ascending paper chromatography. b) Identify and separate the sugars present in the given mixture by radial/ascending paper chromatography.
