AVATAR Project - Advanced Aerodynamic Tools for Large Rotors
The AVATAR project, funded by the European Union, aimed to enhance aerodynamic models for 10-20MW wind turbines, focusing on offshore applications to reduce Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). Led by EERA, the consortium included top research institutions and industry partners. The project ran from November 2013 to December 2017, improving and validating aerodynamic models crucial for large turbine designs. This initiative addressed the gap in existing models for 10MW+ turbines, ensuring their efficiency and performance within design codes.

Main motivation for AVATAR: Aerodynamics of large wind turbines (10-20MW) Off-shore: Upscaling to 10MW+ is an option to reduce the LCOE, however .. 10MW+ designs were outside the validated range of aerodynamic and aero-elastic models as implemented in wind turbine design codes AVATAR improved and validated aerodynamic models for all aspects relevant for 10MW+ designs FP7-ENERGY-2013-1/ n 608396 20-11-2024 4
