Question 4 (15.) source based and S.O.C Question 4; S.O.C of SIMILARITY AND DIFFERNCE . It requires you to develop the content of the unseen source with your own knowledge in order to create an argument. 4. Using details from Passage A and your own knowledge, explain how different the relationship between Xerxes and his people was to that of Cyrus and his people. 15 marks AO3 = 5 marks = Use and analyse ancient sources within their historical context to make judgements and draw conclusions about historical events and historical periods studied. - can you use evidence from the source to support your answer? AO1 = 5 marks = Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the historical periods studied. - can you use your own historical knowledge to support your answer? HINT; what does the passage tell us about Xerxes relationship with his people? AO2 = 5 marks = Analyse and explain historical events and historical periods to arrive at substantiated judgements can you come to a conclusion on the question, that is supported by what your argument as already said? Then, how did Cyrus treat his people? Is the example you give SIMILAR, or DIFFERENT to how Xerxes seems to treat his people?

You miserable fellow. he cried, have you the face to mention your son, when I, in person, am marching to the war against Greece with my sons and brothers you, my slave, whose duty it was to come with me with every member of your house When you did me good service, and offered more, you cannot boast that you were more generous than I; and now your punishment will be less than your rudeness deserves. You and four of your sons are saved by the entertainment you gave me; but you shall pay with the life of the fifth . Having answered Pythius in these words Xerxes at once gave orders that the men to whom such duties fell should find Pythius eldest son and cut him in half and put the two halves on each side of the road, for the army to march out between them. Step 1: READ through the passage, underline or highlight sections that tell us about Xerxes treatment of his people. Step 2: in your books, choose 2 or 3 quotes and explain what each one can tell us about Xerxes treatment of his people. Step 3: THINK, are any of these points similar, or notably different, from how Cyrus treated his people? Herodotus, Histories 7.39 CHALLENGE: create a table, with one column full of historical evidence of Xerxes and Cyrus being the same in how the treated their people. Then the second column full of historical evidence of the kings treating their people differently. Step 4: come up with 2/3 points about Cyrus treatment of people, that you can compare against what you learn about Xerxes treatment of his people.

The first point to consider when assessing *** is . Paragraph checklist; Establish the point you re making about Xerxes treatment of his people. This is evidence in passage A when Demonstrate where that is shown in the passage. We know that . (support your choice of quote with your own knowledge) Explain that quote in more detail using your own knowledge of the history. Explain how Cyrus treated his people, and whether that was similar or different, compared to Xerxes, and go into detail using your own historical knowledge. This proves that (link your point back to the question) TASK: have a go at writing the first paragraph for your answer to the 15 marker question. Make sure you use the question strip and paragraph checklist to make sure you include all the detail you need to!! You must write a clear and well-supported argument that is summarised in a conclusion that comes to a firm decision on the issue. 5. Xerxes sought to continue the work and policies of Darius in every way. How far do you agree with this view? [20 + 5 SpaG] AO1 = 10 marks = Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the historical periods studied. - Do you know your history? Can you properly explain it in detail? AO2 = 10 marks = Analyse and explain historical events and historical periods to arrive at substantiated judgements. - Can you create an argument, follow it through and write a conclusion that supports your argument? SpaG = 5 marks = Learners spell and punctuate with consistent accuracy, use grammar effectively and use specialist terms appropriately. HINT: Make sure you are clear about what work and policies are! Work = building projects and infrastructural improvements Policies = attitudes towards leadership and plans for the empire Think wars with Greece and expansion!
Question 5 (20+5SpaG) essay 5. Xerxes sought to continue the work and policies of Darius in every way. How far do you agree with this view? This question is essentially asking you, did Xerxes have the same focuses as his father, or did he do work and policies for the empire differently. So you need to assess (1). Examples where Xerxes DID continue the same work and policies as his father, and then (2). Compare against examples where Xerxes did NOT continue the work and policies of his father. Evidence that Xerxes DID continue the work and policies of his father Evidence that Xerxes did NOT continue the work and policies of his father [20 + 5 SpaG] CHALLENGE: The question using the words in every way , will you agree with this very firm/ unequivocal argument, or do you think you re answer will be more balanced? War with Greece and suppression of revolts? Building projects in Xerxes reign?
