CIVICS IN ACTION: A CITIZENSHIP HANDBOOK SECTION 3: CITIZEN S RIGHTS/RESPONSIBILITIES
CATEGORIES OF AMERICAN RIGHTS 1) Americans are protected from unfair government actions. 2) Americans shall receive equal treatment under the law. 3) Basic freedoms are guaranteed to all Americans (as stated in the Bill of Rights)
DUE PROCESS OF LAW This is a crucial element of American liberty. It states that the government must follow all procedures and steps established by law and stated in the Constitution at all times. Every American is treated to these principles. Citizens cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Government places limits on citizens rights when the safety and security of others is threatened; moral standards must be preserved; our rights/liberties must never interfere with the rights and liberties of others.
More terms. Citizen- one who owes loyalty to and is protected by a nation Naturalization- the process of granting full citizenship to someone from a different nation
DUTIES OF AMERICANS * obey laws * pay taxes * defend the nation * serve on jury if summoned Duties of citizens are obligations. They are required by law.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF AMERICANS * know/be aware of what the government is doing; talk to your legislators and leaders * be informed, exercise your rights * respect diversity * you are responsible for own actions * support your family * VOTE Responsibilities are things we should do as contributing members of society.
WHY VOTE?? 1) Voting provides each citizen with a format for direct participation in government. 2) Voting allows each American the chance to exercise their right of self-government. 3) Communicating with your representatives, directly or indirectly, is a fundamental privilege we should never take for granted.
