Introduction to the Rural Communication Initiative - YenKasa Africa Implementing a participatory communication plan within the framework of United Nations Decade of Family Farming Leveraging the YenKasa Africa initiative (led by Farm Radio International), the Food and Agriculture Organization and Digital Green are collaborating to promote inclusive Rural Communication Services (RCS) among family farming policies and programmes The collaboration will also build capacities among farmer organizations and rural institutions through knowledge exchange and communities of practice (CoP) in Africa
Activities Online consultations to gather approaches and experiences related to the appropriation of community-based media and ICTs among farmers, their organizations, and rural institutions. Action research to explore trends, evidence and lessons learned, including through case studies of farmer organizations and rural institutions. The results will be integrated into a publication and a policy brief on experiences in rural communication services in Asia and Africa. Knowledge sharing will also be promoted through a community of practice (CoP) in RCS for family farming as part of the YenKasa Africa platform. Such CoP will drive the process of knowledge sharing about rural communication processes, tools, and activities among members of farmer organizations and other rural institutions engaged in family farming.
Deliverables A publication, including at least 5 case studies, that provide evidence on trends, experiences and approaches for appropriation communication and ICT by farmers and rural institutions, and the institutionalization of RCS. It will also include other aspects, such as policy, social and legal frameworks. The document will also include the results of regional consultations in Asia and Africa mentioned below. Policy Brief based on the evidence for RCS. Consultations including webinars, a survey and an e-consultation with CoP that will provide elements for the study and consolidate community of practice on RCS in Africa.
