  1. Senate Committee on Academic Freedom and Faculty Rights report for academic year 2020-2021 No complaint regarding academic freedom and faculty right has been filed during this year. The committee did not meet during this academic year. Instead, the chair sent out an email survey for committee members to raise concerns with or report on issues of faculty rights and academic freedom on campus. Report by Lien Fan Shen, Associate Professor, Dept. of Film and Media Arts.

  2. Potential Issues or Concerns on Campus Respectful conduct in the academic and work environment https://regulations.utah.edu/general/1-021.php A committee member brings up that the governance of this committee might become conflated with this policy, as the process is governed by the Code of Faculty Rights and Responsibilities. https://regulations.utah.edu/general/rules/r1-021c.php Faculty right to choose teaching modes after Covid What are faculty rights in choosing teaching modes after pandemic? For example, when someone can t be vaccinated or choose not to get vaccinated, what are their rights? Concerns with Confucius Institutes on campus and its impact on academic freedom The university promoting acknowledgment of federally-recognized tribes and administrating scholarships to students who are card-carrying

  3. Confucius Institute and it exerts an influence on China-related curriculum Confucius Institutes around the US have been closing in recent years. The Asia Center was concerned that the University of Utah would not renew our agreement with Confucius Institute due to the political climate and rising US-China tensions. A letter of support was signed by the Asia Center and 30 affiliated faculty, delivered to President Watkins, SVPAA Reed and VP Perry in November 2020. Concerns with transparency of the deal between U and Confucius Institute was raised by a committee member: without knowing the details of the U's agreement with the Confucius Institute, this raises potential academic freedom issues. I know that academics have been concerned for a long time about a lack of transparency in Confucius Centers, which potentially exert an influence on China-related curriculum.

  4. Card-carrying or not for Native students? The university promotes acknowledgment of federally-recognized tribes therefore administrates scholarships to students who are card- carrying. According to a committee member, Why I consider this an academic freedom & rights issue is because of my status as a citizen of a federally recognized tribe students who are not card carrying tribal members are essentially penalized, and many Native faculty and staff who bring this to the attention of non-Native admin quash our voices.
