  1. Microgravity

  2. Video: Zero g Video is old (1974) Graphics are old but effective NASA discovers cue cards Do NOT listen to music Several sexist moments

  3. The Elevator Problem

  4. Summary of Elevator Problem When elevator accelerates down the gravitational force > force from the cable and Nellie feels lighter. When elevator accelerates up the force from the cable > gravitational force and Nellie feels heavier. When elevator moves at a CONSTANT VELOCITY up or down the force from the cable =gravitational force and Nellie feels normal. If cable is cut The only force acting is gravity The elevator and all things in it are in freefall Gravity causes all things to accelerate at the same rate (g = F/m) There is NO NORMAL FORCE between the surfaces of the objects Nellie feels weightless

  5. Zero g on Earth Car driving down a dip in a road Stepping off a step and experiencing freefall for a moment Sky diving before reaching terminal velocity Free fall and Tower of Terror rides at amusement parks

  6. Microgravity Summarized Objects are in free fall There is no support force between objects (Non-Normality) Falling as fast as gravity wants to take you Astronauts are falling around Earth (gravity is inward force) All gravitational derived forces have been turned off No buoyancy No density gradients (no sedimentation due to weight) No convection Surface friction minimized

  7. Human Body in Zero g Bone mass decreases Immunity decreases Blood and other fluids pool in upper extremities Muscles weaken including heart Eyesight suffers Spine expands Organs no longer held in place by gravity Vestibular system does adjust

  8. Apparent Weightlessness Not due to being too far from planet. Occurs when there is an absence of support force or an object is in free fall Gravity actually is only force acting Examples Spacecraft in orbit Falling out of an airplane or stepping off step Car or plane in Whoop de doos Elevator of Death
