Othello Pairs This activity is designed to help students to make connections across the text and to think more quickly both in terms of retrieving information and creating a convincing argument. How to play: 1. Split the class into groups of 3-4 students. Give each group a pack of cards. 2. One student deals 7 cards to each member of the group. The remaining cards are placed in a pile, face down, on the centre of the table. 3. The students take a moment to look at their cards. 4. Turn the top card in the central pile face up. Students win the card by matching it with one from their hand. They must justify the match convincingly. If their justification does not convince the group, another student can have a go. 5. When the student wins the card, they place it face up in front of them with the pair. The teacher circulates the room and can challenge a pairing at any time, prompting the student to justify their choice again. 6. The student with the most pairs wins the game. It might be a good idea to play best of 3!
