  4. Pronouns Pronouns replace nouns or noun phrases. Nouns are naming words. They are general names for people, animals, places, things or ideas. Noun phrases are a group of words that do the job of one noun. Common pronouns include: I me they them we us her you it he him mine yours his ours their hers

  5. Pronouns to avoid repetition Pronouns are used to avoid repeating the noun or noun phrase in a text. Jemima strolled to the park with Jemima s dad. Jemima watched the ducks dabbling in the pond before Jemima and Jemima s dad decided that it was time to return home. This can be rewritten, using pronouns to avoid repetition. Jemima strolled to the park with her dad. She watched the ducks dabbling in the pond before they decided that it was time to return home.

  6. Pronouns to avoid repetition Here are some more examples of pronouns used to avoid repetition. The customers queued to order the customers meals. They queued to order their meals. The squirrel buried the squirrel s acorn under the oak. It buried its acorn under the oak. Jamal didn t want to share the new pens. The new pens were Jamal s! Jamal didn t want to share the new pens. They were his!

  7. I, my, me and mine We use the pronouns I, my, me and mine to avoid repeating our own names when we talk. Our own names are nouns so these pronouns replace them. I enjoy reading and drawing in my spare time. My sister often draws with me although she has her own special pencil set because Idon t like her using mine. She makes them blunt! Hamza
