Influence of Renaissance and Reformation on English Language Growth
The Renaissance, starting in Europe, and followed by the Reformation, had significant impacts on the growth of the English language. The influx of Latin words, changes in vocabulary, growth of a standard language, and establishment of new coinages are some key outcomes. The Reformation, in particular, led to political and religious changes reflected in English language development, with the translation of the Bible being a notable achievement.

Introduction 1453-constantinople, the seat of European learning, fell to the Turk and the scholars fled to the western Europe and settled mainly in Germany and Italy. An intellectual awakning of Europe began in Europe which has come to be known as the Renaissance. The full effect of the Renaissance reached England about 1500 and it had a marked influence upon the language and literature.
Chief effects of Renaissance Change in vocabulary, because Renaissance is a classical moment. Latin words entered through French. In the beginning a large part of the church services had been conducted in Latin and also used in medivial religious treatises. Latin was regarded as a sacred medium of expression.
The Reformation followed the Renaissance Its Importance are primarily religious and political, it has it's effects on the language. England became a protestant country, most of these terms were applied to Catholics. Example: 'heretic','papist',' puritan',etc... Important out come of Reformation is English translation of Bible -The chief being Tyndales (1526).The authorised version (1611).
Three aspects of the growth 1)It tended to established a standard language and to discredit dialects, therefore dialects bore the brand of inferiority. 2)It served to popularised and give currency to new coinages and newly introduced words. When a term 'got into print' it had become an accepted part of the language and was not confined to a small group of persons. 3)It tended to fix spelling, about which there had been a great deal uncertainly before. (Johnson's Dictionary)The spelling was more or less fixed by the end of the 15th century.
