In this geometry lesson, we explore various 2D shapes such as square, triangle, circle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, and octagon. We learn about the number of sides and vertices each shape has, distinguishing between shapes based on their unique characteristics.

  1. YEAR 2 GEOMETRY Session 1 identifying sides and vertices in 2D shapes.

  2. Recap What are the names of these 2D shapes? Square Triangle Circle Rectangle

  3. How many sides does a rectangle have? To find this out we need to know 2 things. Side this joins together two vertices. Vertex you many have called this a corner. A vertex is where two sides met at a point. When we are talking about more than 1 vertex we call these vertices. Sides - a rectangle has 4 sides. Vertices - a rectangle has 4 vertices.

  4. How many sides does a square have? Sides - A square has 4 sides. Vertices - - A square has 4 vertices. What is the same about a square and a rectangle? They have the same number of sides and the same number of vertices. What is different about a square and a rectangle? In a square all the sides are the same length. In a rectangle a pair of sides are longer than the other pair of sides.

  5. How many sides does a circle have? Sides - A circle has one side that goes all the way around. Vertices - A circle as no vertices as it doesn t have 2 sides that meet at a point.

  6. What is this shape? How many sides does it have? How many vertices? This shape is called a pentagon. Sides - There are 5 sides. Vertices - There are 5 vertices.

  7. What is this shape? How many sides does it have? How many vertices? This shape is called a hexagon. Sides - There are 6 sides. Vertices - There are 6 vertices.

  8. What is this shape? How many sides does it have? How many vertices? This shape is called a heptagon. Sides - There are 7 sides. Vertices - There are 7 vertices.

  9. What is this shape? How many sides does it have? How many vertices? This shape is called an octogan. Sides - There are 8 sides. Vertices - There are 8 vertices.

  10. All these shapes are called polygons A polygon is a 2D shape with straight sides. A circle is not a polygon as it doesn t have straight sides.
