Terminology Ego corresponds with two words in Indian religious terminology: Ahamkara - to consider oneself superior to others Haumai - to conisder oneself separate to God Origin of these words is not Sikhi! Ahamkara used by Hindu philosophy well before us. There are two independent realities: Purusha = the conscious self Prakriti = the unconscious aspect Purusha + Prakriti = Mat/Buddhi (intellect) Intellect gives birth to Ahamkaara Rajo = activity/passion - from this come the five elements Tamo = ignorance/morbidity Sato = goodness/rhythm - from this comes the five sensory and motor organs
Concept of Maya What is Maya? Is it a separate reality? Is it good or bad? Are worldy pleasures good or bad? What are the consequences of Maya? Evolution of human life and exposure to Maya throughout Through Maya the self believes that it is still an individual I-ness/mineness The Lord is responsible for union of body/soul as well as separation
Ego Everything we do is in ego Ego is the root of all problems Everything is a gift Failure to recognise (ignorance) causes us to be puffed up with ego The head on which you tie your turban very embellishingly, on that head the crow will clean its beak Both virtuous and non-virtous acts are as the result of ego
The mind, body and Hukam Hukam is part of the law of nature Duties and limitations of an individual Individuals working on three planes: mental, physical and spiritual The mind has the potential to lift us spiritually Can wreak havoc if not controlled The body should be kept pure & healthy The body is a chance to realise God
The Name of God Dharma can be realised by controlling the senses Can ego be overcome with virtue alone? Five virtues for five vices Everything we are proud of is not ours God's name and ego cannot coexist in the mind Reciting God's name will eliminate ego
