Legacy 1. A gift by will especially of money or other personal property. (She left us a legacy of a million dollars.) 2. Something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past. (the legacy of the ancient philosophers) - The Merriam-Webster English Dictionary
Spirit and I (Part 1) I was three years old when Spirit landed Spirit images sparked my imagination - other planets were actually places I could visit
Spirit and I (Part 2) I was 9 years old when Spirit died I was proud of Spirit s accomplishments, but at the same time it was like a death of a close friend I was inspired by Spirit to face my own challenges at school
Spirit and I (Part 3) Four years later, I hadn t forgotten what happened to Spirit I wanted to see what had happened to her, like seeing an old friend We could place a memorial plaque near Spirit, if engineering constraints allow
Life Lessons From Spirit Perseverance: Spirit overcame broken wheels, dust storms, and sand traps Turning struggles into successes: Discovery of silica Cooperation: It took thousands of people to send Spirit to Mars
Spirit Rover in Popular Culture The Spirit rover site had 6.5 BILLION hits during the mission that s as many website visits as there are people on Earth!
"To the best of our knowledge, [Spirit] is the biggest government event in the history of the Internet." The Spirit rover site had 6.5 BILLION hits in its first 1.5 months that s as many website visits as there are people on Earth! NASA s Customer Satisfaction Survey during peak Spirit Internet traffic is the highest NASA has ever received That s more hits than the IRS received in 2004 during tax season or NOAA received during Hurricane Isabel As of 2017, ALL government websites have received only 2.3 billion visits in the past 90 days (double the time) All of NASA.gov receives about 1.06 billion web visits in a normal year
Seeing the Hills Through Social Media Spirit and Mars 2020 could have conversations on social media Children (and Mars 2020) could write in to ask Spirit for advice Credit: Jim Rice
Teachers and Mars 2020 Educational materials can be designed ahead of time from Spirit data Columbia Hills science ties in to many classroom disciplines Virtual reality (Google Earth, Mars Trek) can be more realistic and useful thanks to Spirit
A Novel Landing Site We haven t been there for 12 years, so it will feel like a new landing site to the public New, spectacular terrain ( Promised Land ) to explore We can have images like these in advance because of Google Earth data based on Spirit
A Novel Landing Site We have never gone back to test compelling hypotheses from scientifically interesting spots Seeking signs of life is the core mission objective, and the Columbia Hills have potential biosignatures and Earth analogs What would the public think if we didn t go to a place with identified potential biosignatures remember Viking!
Is the Legacy of Spirit Finished? Not Yet I have always been motivated by outstanding achievement and saddened by wasted potential. - Carol Dweck, The Power of Not Yet TED Talk
The Columbia Hills: An Excellent Mars 2020 Landing Site! Columbia Hills: An Excellent Mars 2020 Landing Site! Spirit ground truth ensures scientific success, increases efficiency of caching campaigns Potential, confirmable biosignatures in opaline silica outcrops Comanche carbonates consistent with ancient lake hypothesis and organic carbon preservation potential Safe and flat site for landing, less driving and more science (all ROIs within 5 X 3 km area) Varying amounts of low-temperature aqueous alteration on Husband Hill slopes Samples of interest: sulfate-rich soils & outcrops, soil color diversity, recent aqueous alteration Multiple types of igneous rocks for age dating of Mars surface Extended deposits of eroded volcanic tephra Disputed possible clay outcrops (Fe-rich, Al-rich, and kaolinite) Diverse extended mission targets: etched terrain, kipukas, and impact craters Unique public relations opportunities
