The Decennial Census The purpose is to conduct a census of population and housing and disseminate results to the President, the States and the American People Important Uses of Census data: Apportionment Redistricting Enforcing voting rights and civil rights legislation Distributing$675 Billion (annually) Information for municipal planning, services, resource allocation

  24. Two Categories of Census Geography Legal and Administrative Entities Result from legal actions, treaties, ordinances, and so on. Boundaries generally accepted as provided by appropriate authorities. Statistical Entities Evolve from practice, usage, or need. Boundaries generally delineated using Census Bureau criteria and guidelines

  25. Census Geographic Areas Redistricting data is available for census blocks to build wards

  26. So, what is a Census Block? And why do we care? Census Blocks are bounded on all sides by: Visible Features Invisible Features Streets Local government boundaries (county, city, village, town) Roads Property Lines Streams Imaginary extensions of streets or roads Railroad tracks Wards must follow block boundaries
