  1. Common Units of Measure and Conversion Factors

  2. Area (Length x Width) SQI-square inches (in ) SQF-square feet (144 in ) MSI-thousand square inches (1000 in ) MSF-thousand square feet (144,000 in ) SYD-square yards (1,296 in ) SQM-square meter (1,550 in ) SQKM-square kilometer (1,550,000 in )

  3. Weight LBS pounds MLBS-thousand pounds Ton-two thousand pounds KG-kilogram (2.2 lbs) MT-Metric tonne (1000 kg)

  4. Basis Weight (Weight/Unit Area) Common units: LBS/RM- Pounds per Ream 36 x24 x500 ream basis 3,000 SQ FT 432,000 SQ IN GSM- Grams per Square Meter 1 LB/RM= 1.63 GSM (i.e. 3.1 LB/RM= 5 GSM) 1 GSM= 0.61 LB/RM (i.e. 5 GSM= 3.1 LB/RM) Yield is the Inverse of basis weight (Sqi/Lb or M /Kg)

  5. Basic Measures | Converting Weight to Area To convert weight to area requires three pieces of information: 1. Weight (lb) 2. Basis Weight (lb/rm) 3. Width (inches) Basis Equation: Linear Feet=(Weight)/(Basis Weight*Width*12) Linear Yards=(Weight)/(Basis Weight*Width*36) Linear Meters=(Weight)/(Basis Weight*Width*39.37)

  6. Basic Measures | Converting Area to Weight To convert area to weight requires three pieces of information: 1. Area (Sqi) 2. Basis Weight (lb/rm) 3. Width (inches) Basis Equation: Pounds=(Area*Basis Weight)/432,000 Kilograms=(Area*Basis Weight)/950,400

  7. Basic Measures | Thickness (Caliper) Thickness also referred to as caliper Imperial (English) units Mil .001 (one thousandth of an inch) Referred to as Gauge for film (100 GA= .001 ) Referred to as Point for board (8 PT= .008 ) Metric units Micron 25.4 Micron= 1 mil=.001 =.0254mm .000235 foil = 6um = .006mm
