PSALM 77 For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm. 1I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. 2When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. 3I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. 4You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. 5I thought about the former days, the years of long ago; 6I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked:
6I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked: 7 Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favour again? 8Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? 9Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion? 10Then I thought, To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. 11I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. 12I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. 13Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?
14You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. 15With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. 16The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed. 17The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth. 18Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked. 19Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen. 20You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
Reflect Reflecting helps us to see where God has been at work
We have as a guide what we see, the course we have been following. We see the past because we are facing it. The past is in front of us. No wonder our history with God is so important. It is not just about where we came from. It is the visible guide for our course into the future. - Skip Moen commentary
Ebenezer: Thus far the Lord has helped us. But I will remember the years of the right hand of the most high. I will remember the works of the lord. Surely I will remember your wonder of old. I will also meditate on all your work, and talk of all your deeds . Psalm 77:11-12
Reassess Reassessing helps us understand that God is still at work
Past to present Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles You display your power among the peoples
Respond Responding helps us step into where God is at work next
The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It s our handle on what we can t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. Hebrews 11:1-2, The Message
So much of our lives seem to be consumed with plans for our future. We all want to look ahead as though we will be able to guide and protect ourselves from what may come. But God says that the real direction of our life should be to the past. The course of our life was set in the past. The victory over the future happened in the past. It is our history with God that gives us peace and confidence. - Skip Moen commentary
Will you respond to Gods incredible faithfulness with your own faith today? Will you trust what is unknown to a known God?
