CONSTRUCTION OF FARM POND STORING THE RUNNING WATER TO UTILIZE FOR IRRIGATION
Introduction To work- WATER IS INDISPENSABLE FOR THE SURVIVAL OF ALL FORMS OF LIFE. IN RURAL AREA, WHERE FARMING IS THE MAIN SOURCE OF OCCUPATION, PROPER WATER HARVESTING IS VERY NECESSARY. FARM PONDS ARE DUG OUT RESERVOIR LIKE STRUCTURES, CONSTRUCTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF STORING THE SURFACE RUNOFF AND THE RUNNING WATER FROM THE NATURAL WATER SOURCES. UTTARAKHAND IS BLESSED WITH THE NATURAL WATER SOURCES LIKE GADHERA, NAULA, DHARA ETC. DUE TO SLOPE FACTOR AND HILLY TOPOGRAPHY, FARM PONDS ARE VERY BENEFICIAL IN STORING THE RUNNING WATER. RUNNING WATER, SUPPLYING WATER FOR IRRIGATION AND FISH PRODUCTION. IN GRAM PANCHAYAT DULMOT, WATER FROM THE SOURCE USED TO FLOW ALL TIME AND WAS GETTING WASTED WHILE THE FARMERS WERE FACING THE PROBLEM OF AVAILABILITY OF ENOUGH WATER FOR THE IRRIGATION. HENCE THE FARM POND WAS CONSTRUCTED NEAR THE SOURCE SO THAT THE RUNNING WATER COULD BE STORED FOR IRRIGATION PURPOSE. UNAVAILABILITY OF IRRIGATION SOURCES, IS THE COMMON PROBLEM FOR FARMERS IN THE HILLY AREAS. USUALLY THE NATURAL WATER SOURCES ARE NOT ALWAYS IN PROXIMITY TO FIELDS AND DUE TO THE HILLY CONDITIONS IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO TAKE WATER FROM SOURCE TO FARM LANDS VIA IRRIGATION CHANNELS. DUE TO THE LACK OF IRRIGATION FACILITIES FARMERS FACE THE PROBLEM OF LOW AGRICULTURAL YIELD. HENCE IT WAS IDENTIFIED THAT RUNNING WATER NEEDS TO BE STORED AT DIFFERENT PLACES SO THAT IT COULD BE UTILIZED FOR IRRIGATION. IMPACT OF THE WORK Farm pond constructed in gram panchayat dulmot has proved to be very beneficial in serving as a water storage structure for irrigation purpose. The water from the source used to flow all time and was getting wasted. Constructed farm pond has the capacity of 36000 litres. Twelve families are being benefitted by the farm pond and nearly 0.6 hectares of land is being irrigated. Villagers are satisfied by the work because agriculture yield has increased. Testimonial of the beneficiaries Before the construction of farm pond, there was the scarcity of water for irrigation. Now farmers are happy with the construction of farm pond as the water flowing from dhara is now being utilized for irrigation . Parvender singh- Resident of gram panchayat Dulmot. I worked as unskilled worker in the construction of farm pond. Water from dhara used to flow all time. After the farm pond has been constructed, the wastage of water has been stopped . Rameshwari Devi Mnrega Worker of gram panchayat Dulmot It was the need of villagers in revenue village gadkhark of gram panchayat dulmot to have a water storage structure near the water source. So it was decided in gram sabha meeting to construct a farm pond near the source of water. Now the farmers are being benefitted by the farm pond as the water is being used for irrigation .
