  4. British academic titles The possibility of establishing a consistent approach to academic job titles amongst UK universities was thought to be unlikely. Minutes of the meeting of the Senate of Newcastle University, 17 March 2015

  5. Some recent changes in the UK LSE has changed to a New Academic Career structure (NAC): lecturer assistant professor senior lecturer/reader associate professor professor full professor Bath advertises with an equivalent job title in parentheses lecturer (assistant professor) senior lecturer or reader (associate professor) Staff may use these equivalent titles in international contexts

  6. Sometimes it gets messy Durham has mainly changed to US titles Titles at the Department of Classics and Ancient History: professor, associate professor (reader), associate professor, assistant professor, assistant professor (teaching) but sometimes the old titles die hard Titles at the Department of Anthropology: professor, reader, associate professor (reader), associate professor, research fellow, teaching fellow, senior lecturer, lecturer, assistant professor, research associate, junior research fellow

  7. Changes at Oxford University The grade of lecturer will in future become the grade of associate professor. All staff holding the title of reader will also automatically be able to use the title of associate professor. Reasons: The use of lecturer at Oxford is often poorly understood in much of the rest of the world of higher education, and is a barrier to attracting the best international candidates and to retaining staff of the highest quality . better for Oxford s academics applying for awards and for research funding (not least in the US) better for public profile of Oxford academics on national committees and the like it would help students who seek the support of their tutors in job applications

  8. Other European universities Ghent (BE): US titles. Internally, a more nuanced structure: associate professor 1, associate professor 2, full professor, senior full professor G ttingen, T bingen (DE): mostly US titles, some UK titles Berne (CH): UK titles Vienna (AT): US titles Bologna (IT): US titles Sometimes, assistant professor can be a permanent (tenured) position or associate professor a non-permanent (non-tenured) position

  9. Possible reform Title Translation Notes professor professor In recruitment/employment contracts, full professor may be used lektor associate professor In recruitment, tenured or non-tenured should be specified bitr dande lektor assistant professor In recruitment, tenured or non-tenured should be specified forskarassistent assistant professor No new recruitment to this position universitetsadjunkt lecturer docent docent Should not be translated
