  4. All about learning disabilities There are more than 9000 people in Sheffield with a learning disability. A learning disability happens when a baby s brain is still developing and affects someone for their whole life. People with a learning disability can find it hard to learn and remember information. They might need support with everyday things like cooking, making friends, using money and caring for themselves. They might communicate in different ways. A learning disability is different for everyone no two people are the same. With the right support, people with a learning disability can live the life they choose.

  5. Learning Disability Week June 17th 23rd 2024 Learning Disability Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the lives of people with a learning disability and celebrate what they can achieve. Weston Park Museum is hosting the This is Me exhibition from April June 2024, displaying the portraits and stories of Sheffield Mencap members.

  6. Sheffield Mencap and Gateway is an independent charity formed in 1951 by the parents of children with a learning disability. They now support over 700 people with a learning disability and their carers every week, with current members ranging in age from 6 to 86. The charity s vision is that all people with a learning disability and their carers in Sheffield are valued, included and respected so they can live fair, full and happy lives .
