Community Land Trusts: Empowering Communities through Collective Ownership

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are legal entities run by local volunteers to collectively own and manage property/land, undertake development projects, and secure assets for the community. With priorities set by communities to address local issues like affordable housing and recreation, CLTs provide a means for communities to take control, influence local development, and create affordable property for locals. By engaging the community, setting rules, incorporating as a legal entity, and managing assets, CLTs empower communities to meet their needs and build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods. Stretham & Wilburton Community Land Trust is a prime example of a successful CLT initiative, providing affordable homes, support for local businesses, and community facilities through active community involvement. Manor Farm, a project by the CLT, showcases the impact of community-owned assets in creating a sustainable and thriving local environment.
