Research assessment in RSA and Lesotho involves evaluating research quality, measuring inputs, outputs, and impacts using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The prevailing practices include assessing research productivity for progression and utilizing various assessment mechanisms to ensure the advancement of researchers. However, challenges such as considering research impact without publications and the social relevance of research persist. Moving forward, recognizing the social impact of research, promoting open access journals, eliminating adverse impacts of APCs, and considering a basket of tools for research impact assessment are suggested strategies.

  1. RESEARCH ASSESSMENT TRENDS IN RSA AND LESOTHO Buhle Mbambo-Thata, DPHIL University Librarian National University of Lesotho

  2. WHAT IS RESEARCH ASSESSMENT? Research assessment includes the evaluation of research quality and measurements of research inputs, outputs and impacts, and embraces both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including the application of bibliometric indicators and mapping, and peer review.

  3. WHAT PREVAILS IN LESOTHO? Research productivity is assessed for progression -Through bibliometric -Through publications in high impact journal -Through peer review Open Access publications practiced although elementary APC costly for emerging researchers

  4. WHAT PREVAILS IN RSA? Assessed by institutions for promotion from Lecturer through to Professor Assessed by National Research Fund for rating of individual Researchers Assessed by DHET for subsidy-including SCIELo and DOAJ list These activities all work together to ensure progression of researchers

  5. WHAT ARE THE ISSUES AND CHASMS? Do universal metrics include relevance/ social impact research? In the academic progression process, where do we place research projects that impact community, without publications? How should research impact be considered in a development state? Should small universities be really pursing world ranking or pursued development state priorities? Would DORA address relevance for research that has socio-economic impact without publications?

  6. WHAT ARE POSSIBLE WAYS FORWARD? Considering social impact of research in recognition for progression Open access journals need to considered for progression Adverse impact of APCs to be eliminated Basket of tools for research impact to be considered
